More than likely you'll rip the threads out of the DPF, but I've had it occur on O2 sensors on both the sensor and the exhaust component. It's from the high heat.

Thanks , I usually beat these things to death ,but when it comes time to do the work I usually have a pretty good understanding of what to do , don't like going in blind if I end up doing the work.

One habit I haven't gotten into is starting my truck in cool weather ,and I don't mean like below zero , pushing the start button twice to bypass the grid heater . Done this for a long time , the truck chugs for a few seconds ,and then runs fine . If it's real cold I don't . I'm talking like in the 40's when the grid heater actually activates . When I noticed the black soot in the tailpipe in Montana, I had been starting the truck pushing the start button twice when it was in the 40's in the morning . The last morning I was there I started it normal , and it did it's thing told me grid heater in process ,and it was a few seconds before it started . Just wondering if those cold starts could cause some black soot ??

I've used heat and penetrating fluid (like Seafoam Deep Creep) to help aid in breaking loose dissimilar metals with decent success.... some heat.. then spray on penetrant.. it'll draw it in and help lube / break things up....... sometimes that is... good luck

It really is simply unbolting and reverse the procedure to install.
Bypassing the grid heater should not have made any difference. Once it starts the heater is still on.

The "Barbra Streisand" part of all this is we should not have to pay for this. GUVMENT should be on the hook!!!

Kinda goes right along with that recall on only the 2015 actuators , that made a lot of sense , wonder what made that the only year ? My 2014 went out a bit over 60k .

Reminds me of my '02 with the VP44 dying at 99k without any warning... luckily it happened in my garage and not out in Timbuktu. Or dealing with odd symptoms such as dead pedal or other quirks like blue smoke and what not. Just went kaput no start, which was probably better for my own sanity's sake.

Here it is 2023 and my EcoD truck is still under recall for the CP4. Why do I keep doing this to myself with injection pumps. LOL

@Cummins2014, Sorry to hear you're still having truck issues weighing on you. You need to pull the trigger on AlfaOBD. I'll help you with it and you had mentioned that your son should be able to get his head wrapped around it! Just had my DPF pulled down to tae the DEF injector off to clean. The bolts had no heads on them and had to cut what else was there and drill and tap! No way to do that when installed on the truck! Found a large amount of crystallization in the port. Truck went into limp mode with out a CEL. After the repairs and confirmation that it all work using Alfa, reassembled. Had to take to dealer to reset and they found stored code probably from when DEF pump went south! The amount of blockage tripped ECM to take action. Stored code was P207F. Was only charged an hour of labor for the hook up to clear limp mode. I think I'll add DEF injector cleaning to my maintenance list, which seems to be growing larger!

Thanks , gotta love these emissions issues . Just got back from our Montana trip the truck ran great ,BUT . I have had the P207F code myself early on , had the truck in twice for that under warranty , nothing wrong ,cleared and sent on my way . Have not had anymore of that after the SCR recall . Sounds like you had a bit of fun yourself , sorry to hear about that .

Anyway ,yes I need to pull the trigger on that AlfaOBD, got that last episode taken care of, the nox sensor , and just have been putting it off . I will clean up the exhaust pipe ,and see how it goes . Afraid I'm headed for a new DPF . :( Have been told on another site I should get it fixed as soon as possible , it's possible it can take out the SCR also . Reached out to Sag2 on his thoughts on the SCR getting contaminated or whatever could happen , will see what he has to say about it .

@Cummins2014, Wonder if you are having build up at the DEF injector also. This would impede the flow of the DEF and cause a low flow issue which is part of the P207F code. Great thing was with Alfa, I was able to trigger the DEF pump to check flow along with the injector after I cleaned with distilled water. Made sure that the new hardware for the DEF injector were stainless steel to match the DPF. Also added a touch of copper anti-seize to help with the next time I clean it. When I get my oil change items, will get a DEF injector gasket also. I know you don't short trip your truck. I'm the same that I'll go a few miles out of my way to get up to temp and speed. Plus it allows me a bit more seat time! Just got to look beyond these things and enjoy the time behind the wheel and the time spent away from home! :) Hope it's something simple and maybe check from crystals at DEF injector.

I am not having any CEL, codes or stored messages , just a slight amount of black soot in the end of my tailpipe . Something I've never had . Those P207F codes were several years ago ,when the truck was still on warranty ,and before the SCR recall . It's sure possible I could have some build up , but nothing indicated , and my consumption of DEF seems normal .

The black soot in the tailpipe I have been told on this thread is a possible cracked DPF . I have another trip with the fifth wheel planned early Sept. to Wyoming . I will clean the tail pipe inside for the first two or three inches ,and see if this continues . My only concern at this point is if I am compromising the SCR that was mentioned on another forum . Was hoping to hear back from Sag2 on that to see if continued running would in fact mess up the SCR .

I would like to know too about the SCR being damaged running it with a malfunctioning DPF.

Me too , It was mentioned to me on another forum when I inquired about this soot issue . I have no idea ,but I am sure someone does . Sure hate to take out the SCR also . Sag2 did tell me that just continue driving until it breaks ,and I get a code or until I have to have an emissions check . Hopefully he will come back to this thread ,and tell me that is not a concern with the SCR .

There shouldn't be the slightest amount of soot in your tailpipe. Not at all.
If there is soot something is totally bad with your truck.

Connect to RAM cares immediately, tell them the whole story, including the soot in your tailpipe and see what they say.

That's a good idea. The OP's truck only has 72k on it, but it's a 2014 making it less than 80k miles on normal emissions, but 9 years old.

You never know, Stellantis might pay for some of it.

I have contacted Ramcares , I dealt with them before on the draglink replacement . They were easy to work with . Waiting to hear back from them , I gave them the story ,will see how it goes .

They may pay something , it would be nice if I could at least get it diagnosed on their dime , just to know for sure before I start throwing parts at it .

Sorry my answer was in the wrong thread, was addressed to the "Truck making oil" which is a brand new vehicle with sooted tailpipe
