How does the Cummins emission fine affect us as owners?

Well in my humble opinion and from experience if you get the recall notice do not respond unless you want the engine software updated. My 08 has an open recall for recalibration to the ECM that has never been done. Truck runs fine and there was no reason to mess around with the engine software.

I have a device that Geno's garage sells to cover and lock the OBD II port so, I know if anyone tries to update the engine software they can't. I have had the service writer from a local Ram dealership asked me why the port was locked. I said to prevent unauthorize use of the port, he stated the dearer tech could update the service records and update the truck if there were any updates required. I said that is exactly why the OBDII port is lock. I was in for another reason then engine work.
 
@Wiredawg, Not just the high HP/torq setups. My lonely Tradesman has the 67A recall attached to it! It's gonna get even more interesting the closer we get to actually finding out what the "fix" is!
Keep that truck looking good there! Just don't wax the paint off of it! Glad to see your still getting out and doing what you can. Share that same motivation to keep moving and doing with what I can for as long as I can till back makes it too difficult too!

The C&Cs have the lowest HP/TQ ratings of the Ram HD truck lineup, including the 2500s. So the higher HP isn't just the HOs, but the SOs too. In fact, within the C&C level, I my 2017 5500 C&C has the C&C HO as the C&Cs with manual transmissions were rated lower than 325/750 at 320/650.

My limited and non-educated guess is any tune above the max tune Cummins offered on it own commercial non-Ram engines is included in the affected engines. I used to wonder why Cummins didn't offer higher tunes on their commercial 6.7L engines. BTW, I have a 2019 International MV607 (motor home) that has the Cummins commercial 6.7L engine.

Not sure if the pending emissions issue is already affecting new Ram HD truck sales, but there are some big markdowns and lots of inventory of Rams with Cummins engines. I guess time will tell.

From what I gather it's a combination of things, and of course this here Cummins in the news headlines didn't help. I also keep hearing that 2025 the 2500/3500 will have new transmissions. Won't really know until a few months from now when they announce.

I could be holding up a lightning rod in a thunderstorm saying this, but I think our truck buying days are over, so for me, it's just hoping and cheering for Cummins and Ram that this is just a bump in the road, and that they both get through it fine. I'm a lifelong Mopar guy and I want the Cummins/Ram team to excel.

My wife has her 2019 Ram 1500 5.7L 8spd that we love to drive and it has a Lifetime Mopar Extended Warranty that we will be keeping, short of it being totaled or stolen. I received some warranty paperwork that referenced our limited mileage warranty, so I went to dealer and asked what the limited mileage is and it is 999,999 miles. I guess no worries after all.

When we bought our used 2020 MH with 6.7L Cummins and Allison, I started to trade off the Laramie 5500 for an in stock 2021 Ram Laramie Longhorn 3500 SRW, but the commercial sales manager was out on Saturday to value my 5500 as trade, so needed to wait until Monday for him to return. When my wife asked me why I wanted to trade off the 5500, I told her we didn't need all that load carrying capacity and the size of it. She asked since when is too much truck a bad thing. And how much shorter and narrower is the new truck. Its about a foot shorter and a couple feet narrower. And what about all the upgrades you put on it? So, in just a few minutes of discussion, she convinced me our paid for 5500 was also a keeper. I called Monday and cancelled the pending deal. I think I was looking at a great deal like @AH64ID got on his SRW 3500.

So, we pretty much have our forever trucks. And I hope the fix doesn't hurt power and fuel mileage on all the affected trucks. I went to dealer and saw some really nice inventory. They had a nice Black Edition 3500 that started me itching, so I left. Ram does make some beautiful trucks that still make me want one. LoL.

There is never too much truck. I learned that a long time ago. I would keep that 5500 too. I like the setup of it too.

Doesn't appear so. But from a liability standpoint, if one to get in an accident and it maims someone, then maybe, but the other side may better have a good lawyer, because that alone unless proof beyond a shadow of a doubt caused it, it's highly unlikely. In other words, you'd have a better chance getting struck by lightning twice in the same spot.

It likely will fully depend on what the recall is for.

Let say you ignored the grid heater relay recall and told your dealership not to replace it and then your truck burns down. Ram will likely pin that on you for refusing the service.

Software is a bit trickier, but can be similar depending on the update.
 
It’s just too easy to increase DEF dosage. We can look at how these trucks have progressed over the years to know that the engineers have realized how bad EGR is, how bad the exhaust brake for warmup is, and what minimal changes in timing do for exhaust temp, NOx, and economy.

It’s definitely a fine line of longevity, emissions, maintenance, and fuel economy. Emissions throws the biggest wrench in the mix.

We need to get to a point where it’s after treatment only.

We OWNERS are the only way to fight back by not getting the recall update! IMO. Make the EPA pay us BIG TIME(A LOT MORE than $3300/truck!!) if they want them updated that bad!
I will not get mine updated!
 
What will happen in some states is that the vehicles registration won't be renewed without the recall being performed. I have heard this happen with folks who have owned VW's.
I would resist the recall as long as possible.
The 2020 3500 HO truck my brother purchased a year ago has gone to the dealer 4 times for emission work over the past year. It is currently still stuck at the dealership. He will end up being a guinea pig for the new software.

It depends on how long it takes to get fixed. There isn't a recall for the 20-23 models yet, and I haven't read anything about a proposed recall yet.
 
got my recall today in the mail. im grumpy. 2018 ram w g56. runs fine. the tags are up in a few weeks and i live in a commie state ( colorado ) i guess ill find out if i can renew without the recall being done. i love my truck, but lots of trips to the dealer.... cheers all ! happy new year.
 
This is exactly why BMW and Mercedes no longer sell diesels to comply in the United States! Just pure ridiculous, and they didnt buy into the Democrats Dumbing Down Campain in America! The EV push is strictly due to investments! There was a comparable study of a Chevrolet Volt against a Ford Superduty 250 Diesel on greeness! The Volt left the bigger footprint........Hmmmm
 
Earlier, I mentioned I lock my OBDII plug on my truck so there is no unauthorized access/updates to my truck, HOWEVER, I have approved all of the updates be performed on my truck. I've even paid for an update after I went out of warranty on it. I just wanted to clarify I do support performing updates, but, just like on my computer, I review updates before approving them. So far, I've not had any problems with updates on my trucks.
