48re Tramsmission noise

On my 2007, 5.9, with 48re Tran’s I am hearing an odd noise. It’s like a whooooooo but higher pitched but not quite wheeeeeeeee. When the truck and trans are cold this noise appears between 15 and 19 mph. And sometimes around 10 mph. It happens in all gears when accelerating
very gently, moderately or aggressively. Also happens when decelerating from 19 to 15 mph. The noise starts fairly quietly and gets louder
during acceleration. At 19 mph the noise ends very abruptly as if shut off by a valve opening or closing. The noise is not heard when the trans warms up.
The trans has 271K miles on it and I have changed the fluid (atf+4) and the filter every 60K miles.
Years ago I replaced two sensors in the valve body
when the trans seemed to always be hunting for the next gear when accelerating gently. The sensors fixed that problem and I have not had any others until now.
The trans is not low on fluid or over full.
I am hoping someone has solved this problem in the past and can steer me in the right direction to getting it fixed. The rear diff ratio is 3:73.

I forgot to say that the bands have been adjusted properly every 60K miles.

Are you sure it's coming from the trans and not engine related like PS pump?
10mph is awfully slow and the trans is hardly turning at that speed aside from the pump.

Well, I’m not positive it’s transmission but it is not related to engine RPM. It makes the noise in different gears and RPMs but always at the 15 to 19 mph. Also at 15 to 19 while coasting downhill in gear at idle. When it warms up outside ( it’s 13 now) I will do more checking.

Sounds like possibly a pinion bearing. While making the noise while coasting, if you give it just a little throttle, does it go away?

24 degrees outside. I checked the ps fluid. It’s full, no leaks. Revving the engine in park or neutral will not make the noise. Coasting in neutral the noise is the same accelerating or decelerating. The noise is the same both accelerating or decelerating with the foot brake applied. Accelerating in gear in reverse causes the noise also at 15 to 19 mph. The pinion bearing is a possibility but why would the noise only be happening in such a short range of speed and cut off so abruptly at the upper speed? Adding throttle while coasting does not change the noise until above 19 mph.

Well, I’m still confused at to what’s causing this. At 2 degrees (brrrrr) there was no noise but after 10 miles as all the turning parts warmed up the noise returned. Now the noise often starts at 6 mph and abruptly ends at 10 then starts at 15 and abruptly ands at 19. I drove 700 miles home from cold country with no issues except the noise. Will disconnect the Banks exhaust brake to see if that changes anything. If not I’ll put the truck on blocks and have a friend run it while I listen.

I had an issue with my 89 dodge Dakota it was howling real bad ,less when I turned off the OD. Talked to a retired trans builder and he kept going to the rear end. He buy a listening device on Amazon , put it up on jackstands and clip the lead on the rear end ,well the noise wasn't there, I then clipped to trans OD unit and listened to it howling. He said there is 1 roller bearing at the very rear of the OD that is bad. Replaced it no more noise.

Thanks for the info on your OD bearing and the Steelman listening tool. I ordered the tool. I’m sure it will held solve my problem.

Well, with the truck up on blocks, running in drive I could hear no odd noises at any speeds.
Listening with the broomstick it was evident. The carrier bearing was bad. Replaced it and no more
of that noise.
