Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) soot is fouling my truck and garage floor

I've decided to take the truck to a injector shop. They will run a full scan plus test injector pump pressure and pull the injectors and test them. If everything ok guess I'll put on a stock muffler as a trap. I really didn't notice much performance gain when I went to 4" turbo back and low...

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) soot is fouling my truck and garage floor

Some time ago I had thought about installing an RV injector but was afraid of more black smoke. Will the Mach 1. 5 increase smoke( no dribbling but more smoke) ? Will it affect EGTs at high altitude and towing heavy load. Right now I have a problem above 7,000 feet and getting to max EGT...

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) soot is fouling my truck and garage floor

Truck has about 80k miles. When I start it up with no throttle I get puff of black smoke and dry soot exiting the tailpipe. After initial puff the exhaust clear but yesterday I wrapped a white towel around exhaust tip and ran it for 3 minutes a idle. The towel came back black and slightly oily...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Woooshhh, psst, turbo bark???

Tim, you have relieved me greatly. Thought maybe I was going in wrong direction!!!! Your explanation was very clear, you should be a teacher!! I will learn to be a little easier on the throttle. Thx. . George

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Woooshhh, psst, turbo bark???

I have a strange sound that sounds like air coming back thru my air filter when I let off throttle quickly. However it only occurs at very low speeds and low throttle setting, below 20 MPH and only after I complete a pull with my trailer at highway speeds and pull off to frontage road and maybe...

    Pacbrake on Automatic

I have Pac-Brake on my 2001. Works great but I wouldn't have it without a controller. If TC doesn't lock up the brake doesn't retard well. Once brake is engaged and retarding all the load goes to the transmission (I'm told) and TC must be locked up to prevent overheating and overloading. That said...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Cheapest performance gain for towing

Thanks for all the replies and pictures. It's obvious I need to do more homework because when it comes to increasing HP on a diesel I don't understand some of the terms you guys are using or the purpose of some of the upgrades. I assume a J-hook or turnbuckle attaches to the wastegate and forces...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Cheapest performance gain for towing

Ok, I'll bite. What is a J hook or turnbuckle for?. Allow wastegate to open further? I'm not much of a dlesel guy. Is this something you can install yourself?

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Pacbrake or BD for auto

I have a Pac-brake with ATS 5 *Torque convertor/valve body (same setup as triple loc) and an ATS Co-pilot transmission/exhaust brake controller. I have controller set so brake range is +35 MPH. Below that speed the TC unlocks and brake will not operate. When towing in mountains I set it to drop out at...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Cheapest performance gain for towing

Combined weight is 20,000 lbs. Grade varies from 6-8% but it's long pull, over 30 miles from Denver to top. Pacbrake is turbo mounted but I had problem before I installed Pac-Brake but have noticed EGT rises quicker since I installed the Pac-Brake.

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Cheapest performance gain for towing

"when u say hot do u mean egt or radiator?""" Kind of both. Haven't run over Rockies since I installed a 4 inch exhaust. Engine was definetly hot and almost in red zone, transmission around 220 and egt always wanted to exceed 1300 so I kept feathering back on the gas to hold 1250. Egt is a problem...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Cheapest performance gain for towing

I would like about another 50HP to improve towing when trying to cross Rockies on hot days. Currently I'm down to 25-30 MPH and running hotter than I like by the time I crest at the Eisenhower tunnel on I-70, about 10,000 ft or 5,000 ft higher than Denver. I don't quite understand difference...

Voltage drop thru Dodge trailer lights connector

More info My wires are already 12 to 16 gage on truck and 14 gage on trailer. I now suspect, if I have a problem, it could be where they spliced into the Dodge receptacle wires to add another receptable in the truck bed. I get the same voltage drop at both receptacles which could be caused by a...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) What does exhaust resonator do?

Jim, way more than I wanted to know!!! But thanks, I actually knew a lot of this, I did vibration analysis on rotating equipment in power plants for a few years. I received very conflicting information from diesel mechanics and Dodge. I originally assumed it was tuned to reduce "noise" but Dodge...

Voltage drop thru Dodge trailer lights connector

I have 2001 with tow package. I get anywhere from a 1 to 2 volt drop at my 5th wheel brake/tail lites when connected, drop dependent on how many lites I turn on. I'm connected into the standard Dodge 7 pin receptacle that came with the tow package. Even when not connected I can measure a slight...
