hello, I have the following problem with the automatic, it will not go into overdrive! what can I do to solve the problem?

I have a problem with the transfer case, the rear driveshaft when I put the transmission in gear will come out off the case about 1 inch. There is also a lot off play at the rearoutput off the case. Can someone tell what I can do about this, or do I need a complete overhaul?

thanks for the reply's on my post. It happens once a month only in the summer when it's warm, and it happens on highway or in town.
