2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Hard cold start - "mystery" solved

I've had no grid heaters for 15 months. The truck has been to the dealer three separate times. Each time I was told both grid heaters are cycling properly, the relays are fine, no codes were set, and I'm essentially full of crap. Still, the symptoms remained -- it was hard to start in 35 degree...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Hard Start in Cold Temps

Thanx, WestTN. I'll replace the fuel heater fuse and note any changes in a cold start-up. I'm not real optimistic, though. Fuel shouldn't gel at 30 to 35 degrees. I agree, though, this does nothing for the grid heaters. If the dealer insists the grid heaters are working, is it possible that...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Hard Start in Cold Temps

I've already checked all relay connections on the grid heater, but just did it again to be sure. Tight as a drum. But, for the heck of it, I opened the fuse box under the hood. I noticed a relay and a 40 amp fuse, both referred to as "fuel heater diesel". I pulled the fuse, and the wire was...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Hard Start in Cold Temps

My truck continues to have extreme hard-start problems in cool temperatures, even at temperatures as high as 30 to 35 degrees, and even after cycling the grid heater 2 to 3 times. Each attempt ends up in a huge cloud of white smoke. I've had it to the dealer several times in the past year...

    EGT Gauge Problems?

"Dong Dog"? That was a slip, right? Sorry for the delay, I have an odd schedule. I just checked the thermocouple leads under the hood, all appears fine. I'll print this out since the other suggestions (all good) may have to wait until Monday. I'll let you know. Thanx. ------------------...

    EGT Gauge Problems?

Under Product Reviews on TDR's home page, there's an article entitled "Westach Gauge Install". I have the same rotary switch set-up to monitor both pre-turbo and post-turbo EGTs on a single Westach Combo gauge. It's worked great for over a year -- monitor pre-turbo temp when pulling loads...

    Need opinion... Extra Fog lights

I've had similarly sized PIAA 1500XT driving lights (not fog) in the same opening, for a full year now, and no problems at all with overheating. Before they were installed, I asked the service department if that opening was meant for ventilation. They said no. Maybe they're right this time...

    Chronic U-Joint Failures?

Thanx, Andy. Good stuff. I'll print this out, since my problems likely aren't over. Regarding the coal economy, life is good! The price has doubled as half the country is trying to keep the lights on in California...

    drive shaft leaks

I had the same seal replaced at 22,000 miles or so. I just checked it at 39,000 miles, and it's starting to slightly "weep" -- but not enough to drip (yet). ------------------ 2001, SLT 2500, reg cab, 4x4, 6 spd, HO, 4:10, LSD, Westach Combo Gauge, stock

    Chronic U-Joint Failures?

A full year of lurking in the shadows is enough. I've twice lost the rear driveline u-joint -- at 22,000 miles, and again at 39,000 miles. It's mostly non-towing, unloaded, highway miles for a 130 mile round-trip daily commute. Anyone else hear of this problem, or am I just blessed...
