My fuel mileage just dropped like a rock

Any neighbors with a diesel and syphon hoses? I know it sounds like a bad joke, but with the price of fuel I wouldn't ignore the possibility. Paul

    To Alaska advice

Not to be a jerk or smart*****, but just how fast do your brothers drive and do they overload their trailers? I've personally driven the Alaska Highway at least 15 times and I've never had a flat tire on any of my vehicles, nor have I ever heard of anyone blowing all 4 tires on one trip. In...

    To Alaska advice

My parents just got in from Vancouver BC last night. The roads from Vancouver to Whitehorse were in pretty good shape, no rock chips in the windshield of the mini-van. Gas was $1. 20 a litre in Vancouver but dropped down to $1. 059 - $1. 099 once they got out of the Vancouver area. My experience...

To Synthetic or not to Synthetic

I switched mine at about 6000 miles, not for economy, but because the manual told me that's what I needed for cold weather. However, it hasn't seemed to hurt the break in process as I got 23mpg (US, it was 27mpg imperial) hand calculated last summer on one road trip. Paul

    Planning a drive to Alaska

Yes you can take a trailer, but they charge by the foot. Did a quick online check and it looks like if you booked a ticket with an overall length of 50 feet (truck and trailer), you'd be looking at about $2300 from Bellingham to Haines for the truck, trailer and two passengers in June. Here...

diesel in BC and Alaska ?

I'm guessing you'll be driving through the Yukon to get from BC to Alaska, right now it's . 959 L for diesel in Whitehorse or about $3. 206 US per gallon. Of course the prices vary wildly up and down the highway. Paul

    I love this truck

Stock tank, full to the brim. I don't have the fuel vent mod, but I always get the tank full to the neck, that way I fuel up less often and my calculations are more accurate. I primarily use my truck for highway traveling, and the highest speed limit around here is 62MPH. One trip this...

    I love this truck

I can 800 miles out of a tank if I'm empty, on the highway and I take it easy. That's not calculations, that's actual distance traveled. I've done it a number of times, and I never go under an 1/8 of a tank.

    I love this truck

Oh that's just my dad wondering why he spent all those years with the camper on his Ford with a 460 :-{} . We were lucky to get 350 miles with that truck with full tanks. He was very impressed, especially with the fact that on the highway I could set the cruise on in sixth gear and climb...

    I love this truck

Put the camper on and went hunting last week. The animals and weather didn't want to work with me, but the truck, it just kept going and going... It is so nice to have a vehicle that can go 600 miles on internal fuel and still carry all the gear I need. People talk about how an automatic is...

    Airborne Camper

The North Canol is a road built in WWII in an attempt to get a easier path to Canadian Oil. It is a summer/fall road used by locals for hunting and tourism. The mining and oil industry uses it for exploration. It goes from the Alaska Highway up to the NWT border and beyond, covering a fair...

    Airborne Camper

 So my dad took my 8 foot slide in camper on a road trip up the North Canol road last week. He called me last night to tell me that he hit a section of road that was like a ski jump and got himself airborne at about 15mph. Everyone is ok, but the truck (his Ford thank heavens :p ) and...

    First 20 MPG trip!!

Hi Eric, 8100 miles on the truck, built on December 22nd, no flashes. Bought the truck and went on a 3000 mile trip, then hooked up a 4000 pound trailer drove another 2100 miles, and then I was getting good mileage. When driving 70MPH at the begining of the trip I was getting about 17 -...

    First 20 MPG trip!!

Ok someone else will call BS on me too, especially since people keep saying that the 2006 6-speeds are doing lousy for mileage. I got 22. 6 MPG last weekend, and yes that's US gallons, hand calculated. Drove up to Dawson and back, 701. 3 miles and took 119. 34 litres (filled to top of the...

Factory cruise w/ G56- work OK?

I've run my cruise control at 75mph, 70mph, 65mph, 62mph (100km/h) and 56mph (90km/h). All in 6th gear, most empty, but 2100miles of that was with a 5000 pound trailer behind me. No surging at all. Seems funny for them to say that to run 55mph empty without surging you have to run in 5th at...

Change Receiver to XBR or Not???

Uh guys I have to take issue with your logic that all Gen III hitches must be weak because Gen II trucks had a problem, with an acknowledged problem at that. Dodgeram. info. Sorry, but that's a little bit like saying "Ford has a problem with their hitches, so Dodges must too". Gen III trucks are...

    Alaska trip in a cab-over-camper

CBC The exchange rate is about half way down on the right hand side of the page. This is the link that I usually use. There are others, but I know this one off the top of my head.

    Alaska trip in a cab-over-camper

I try to carry a VISA, Mastercard, and at least $200 local cash when traveling. That way if one of the credit cards stops working you can use the other. This actually happened to me in March when I was driving the highway. VISA thought it strange for the credit card to be used all the way up I-5...

    Alaska trip in a cab-over-camper

Well the good news is diesel is less expensive than gas in the Yukon. The bad news, it is still pretty expensive. A month ago when I drove the highway it was: Vancouver $. 949 /litre ($3. 59 CDN per US gallon) Cache Creek $. 959 /litre ($3. 63/US gallon) Prince George $. 949 /litre ($3...

Guns in trailer through Canada to Alaska??

Yup, we can hunt In the Yukon we can hunt moose, caribou, mountain sheep, mountain goats, bison, black bears, grizzly bears and small game. The Yukon is separated into 11 game zones, with up to 90 subzones. When you get your hunting license you are given maps indicating which zones you can hunt...
