Engine rebuilt and new clutch installed then. I was told then it needed a new Pilot Bearing and input shaft... . then was told 2 days later that the shop "polished" the input shaft, and it would be fine.

so, 60,000 miles later, the clutch slips. shop find the pilots bearing trashed, input shaft trashed, input bearing and seal... . Clutch covered in oil.

$1000 for trans repairs, $900 in Clutch and parts, $1000. 00 labor

New Slave and Master Cylinder installed.

Now the clutch engages about 2 inches off the floor, with 6" of slack at the top of the stroke. Very difficult to get into gear, and hard to shift.

Shop tells me it is Piece of S--- design, no way to bleed. Thinks it has air in the line, and know way to get it out. He "bench bled" both.

Then I look at the bill, says it is a NP4500 trans, when it is the SIX SPEED, which I thought was the NV 5600. He filled it with 75W90 SYN. gear lube. Is that correct?

Was I robbed?

At a very minimum, he screwed you on the oil. These get similar to a 5/30 motor oil. Very lightweight. 75/90 will mess it up in a hurry, no wonder it won't shift! I'd make them change that immediately.

I'd find a new shop. It's apparent these morons don't know their fourth point of contact from their elbows. I'd also go and talk to the shop manager to recoup money for the work done. Their ineptness caused your problems. The NV5600 (which yours definitely is) has its problems, but if it was originally determined that you needed a new input shaft, then they should have replaced it, saving you the headaches you now have. Also, the bearing should have been replaced, when you got the new clutch installed. Hopefully you have all of your paperwork from the original install. If you get no resolution from the manager, then file a Better Business Bureau complaint against them.

Paul,

I just looked at your sig..... to my knowledge, they didn't make an '01 HO 6-speed with 3. 54 gears..... The ETH 6-speed manuals all came with 4. 10's and the ETC autos and 5-speed manuals got 3. 54's. Did you change your gears out?

Not for certain that mine is an HO, but I am certain I have a six speed with 3:5. 4's.

I thought that the 6spd was a giveaway on the HO though?? Just some collective knowledge from casually reading through here. Not an educated guess by any means.

The 4. 10 gear ratio was an ($50 if memory serves me correctly) option on these trucks. You could order it with either ratio, 6 speed or auto.

I am looking at swapping out my 410's for 354's as well. Can you tell me what rpm's you pull at 75mph? I have stock tires.
Thanks in advance!

I run right at 2200 going 75mph. Empty I get around 18-19 mpg with the hypertech, 15-16 without and 1900rpm's on the two lanes at 65mph. I am running stock tires as well.

Bear in mind I deal with a constant state of headwind. Not sure how it happens, but when the wind blows 400mph, as it does here in Wyo, it always seems to be coming right at you!

I run between 21-2200 @75. With my old dying turbo, 19-20mpg always. New turbo and around 22. Thats if I stay below 77-78mph and don't pound it too hard.

I also agree with others. Call the BBB. If you have a friend who is a lawyer, it'd help. Many times, Telling them you are talking to one does wonders. If not, get one! GOOD LUCK. It sucks getting that kinda screwin without a lil kissn!

But i need this truck for a 1500 mile trip in the Morning... .

I can handle a clutch that engages very low to the floor. It will be mostly highway miles, so no big deal.

It has been over a year since the 1st clutch was installed, so i dont know how much luck i will have with that shop. A year ago, that shop charged me $10,000. 00 for the rebuild of my engine, and a new clutch. (This is a new shop, which does not sound any better... )

But this oil thing... .

I argued this with the shop owner... . he tells me he called the dealer, gave them the VIN number, (not trans number) and they told him it takes 75W90 full Syn. They "farmed out" the actual trans repair to a trans shop. The shop that reworked the trans is a "expert" on these units, and also told him to fill it with (8 quarts?) of 75W90 Synthetic.

What oil does it take?

You paid WHAT?????? Holy crap, for $10,000 you could have gotten a brand new Cummins!!!!!! A rebuild should NOT have cost near that much! Now you know it's time for a lawyer!

Paul,

From what I can see in your posts, the shop filled your NV5600, six-speed manual transmission with 75W-90 gear oil.

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR TRUCK WITH THIS OIL IN THE TRANSMISSION.

Now, having said that in all caps, I'll state that it may not do as much damage as I think, but Dodge is very forceful in telling owners that we MUST use oil that meets the specifications for that transmission. Gear oil doesn't.

If it were me, I would rent a truck for that trip before I'd drive mine with gear oil in my six-speed.

Naturally, it's your truck and you can do what you want, but think a while before running that transmission with that oil. The clutch you can live with, but do you want to risk your transmission?

Good luck,

Loren
