A few things that could have caused a cam failure,1 running a low quality oil or wrong viscosity, Having a lot of soot in suspension in the oil could have caused this, Cummins had problems with this in the older M11 engines and cat had some engines with the same problem. Or a bad valve adjustment, Too tight or too loose for too long.

As far as the gear I am with John.

What would be the best cam be to replace it, Stock or other? Where would be the best place to get one? Any suggestions. My buddy wants me to put the cam in for him. Is it very hard? I've only put cam's in Deere engines, never had to over haul a Cummins:D The sleeves and pistons looked almost new when I had the head off. Sleeves still had the cross hatch pattern on them and almost no grove at the top. I was impressed for a 155,xxx miles on the engine.

The ISB cummins has a solid block, no sleeves in it unless it was bored out and dry sleaved back to stock bore size.

Lot of people are running the factory cummins marine application cams. If he isn't after big HP just go back with a factory cam. There are a few aftermarket cams, F1, Hamilton, Piers, Scheid just to name a few. Do not get a regrind get a new one.

Sounds vaugely familiar. Just bought a new cam and tappets from cummins for a friends 01' auto at the tune of $800. Reason for doing so, he called me and said the truck was knocking very badly. When I got to the truck it wasnt knocking,I would say it was a loud tapping sound. I have been through about the same process with this one, still have a noise, just not as bad as when I started. I checked te torque converter and flexplate first. All good there. Pulled the injectors, looked fine wihout any defects, he wanted to try new anyway. Installed jammer stage 5s, noise a little better. Pulled cam and tappets, both measuring below serviceable specs. just installed New cam and tappets, noise still better, but not gone. Running a Fass 150, Drag Comp, 5 in. Grand Rock exhaust, pump was replaced with another stock one a few years ago. 129,000 miles. Diesel shop in the area had same problem on an 01', did everything I have done, tightened the valves down to . 008" to quiet it down enough for the owner to sell it. They couldn't get rid of the noise. Anyone else heard of anything like this?

As I posted above, Oil samples are priceless. First defense in preventing problems before they get to the point of noise or no return.

Then go from there, cheap and easy to do.
