'01 Gearshift pattern diagram

This is probably a very silly question but here goes, I have an '01 six speed. In 7500 miles, the pattern illustration on the gearshift knob has rotated 90 degrees to the right. It is now horozontal. I've tried to unscrew the knob and to pop out the illustraton but nothing seems to be giving. Before I tear something up, does anyone know what the trick is?

The plastic piece with the pattern is free to rotate, although not easily. You should be able to rotate this piece by pressing firmly with the palm of your hand while you turn your hand.

The shift knob itself is not rotating. The knob is threaded to the shaft and locked in place by a large nut under the plastic insert.

If you ever wish to remove the knob you'll need to carefully pry out the pattern insert. Once that's done the rest of the removal process will be obvious.

Mine rotated the same way. I pried the insert out with a dull knife and then put some glued on it. It has not moved since.

Like the other have stated,it is easy to take the dial out. My only bit of advise is to do it on a warm day,or if the shiftknob has sat in sunlight. This will soften up the vinyl material that the shiftknob is made of.
I once took one out on a kinda cold evening and the knob ripped slightly... doh! Never had a problem during the day.

I fixed mine the easy way, I got a B&M hammer T-handle, and it never rotates. #ad
