Need help with tach signal.

4bt weight

Well two weeks ago I picked up my donor truck 01 ex-cab short box 5. 4 auto 2wd 175K for under $6K. I had a 99 dually chassis 4x4. So now the donor truck is 4x4 and lifted 3". My 12 valve is at the machine shop. I am running a NV4500 and SB DD 12 CB clutch and a DHD 241. The rear 80 just got lincoln locked and the front is open.

Couple questions for the guys who have done this conversion.

Can the stock Cummins vacuum pump run the vacuum booster for the brakes? I didn't think it would be a prob but I was thinking the dodges were vacuum boosted not hydro boosted, but thats not the case.

What alternator is being used in this application?

Anyone have any links to a wiring schematic for a 5. 4?

I am guessing that my check engine light will be on, just use resistors in place of the sensors not used?

Thanks in advance to any advice.

Adam

Yes, the Cummins vacuum pump should power your brake booster. Probably easiest to make or buy brackets to mount your Ford alternator. Otherwise, you will need an external regulator for the Dodge alternator. Hopefully someone else will jump on and answer your other questions.

This is how my truck is setup to run the a/c. My brakes are hydroboost because i converted from a 7. 3. Got some hose and $1 plastic adapter to make the connections, so simple. The Cummins vacuum pump makes the vents change super fast, big improvement. I converted to manual hubs but i see no reason why brakes and hubs won't work as well.

Sounds like an interesting project. Still got the cummins in the '79 or is that being transpalnted in your new superduty?

I used the cummins vacuum pump to assist the ford power brakes. Works great.

I also used the cummins alternator with a ford external regulator. This way theres no fabbing up brackets and finding a custom serp belt to make it work.

Just a little advice... . if you are going to keep the ford HVAC box, then mount the cummins as far forward as you can. This should give you more clearance for the turbo. Especially if you want to run a bigger turbo or even twins down the road.

Good Luck on the project!

Chad,

This is a new project with a new motor. Finally got rid of the powerstroke! Thanks for the advice, what external regulator are you using?

Yes I still have the 79 with the cummins in it as well.

Pretty sure its just your typical old style ford truck regulator that one would find on the side of the fender wall. I can look and see if there are any numbers on it if you want. So where is all this taking place? Kevin's place? I drove by there on Friday. Sounds like an awesome project. Id like to stop by and see it sometime. So will this be a dually bed or are you using the DRW D80 with a SRW bed?? If so I have a few questions for you.

See ya!

You would have to do some reasearch but my 90 does not even have a computer so I know the regulator is somewhere else but I'm not sure if it is in the alternator or external but either way it could be used. Sounds like you are building my dream truck. I would love for my cummins to not have to drag my pos dodge around. I would also like to see this project and meet you. I told Mark Hill to give me a call if your ever out there so I can come shoot the breeze with ya. Hopefully I'll be able to make it to a couple of your truck pulls this year. Good luck with the project.

Cade

Chad I will give you a call I am living just south of the Hudsonville exit now.

Cade,

I think I talked to your dad at auto value in MT P one time. Blanchard will be having a pull this year but Remus will not have any more truck pulls. Had a gasser clutch explode into the crowd, now insurance doesn't like the trucks, thanks for the good luck!

Yeah I will get more pics up soon. Check out the motor pics and the valve relief video on there now. Motors going to be fired this weekend.

I see you must have figured out your turbo mount. What did you end up doing to make it fit? What kind of #s did you get at MA? Kevin take his down there? I heard there was a pull in Blanchard last Friday did you pull it?? Truck looks like it came together pretty good!!

Well I am going to have to talk to Brady at II my 913 pump doesn't seem to be putting out the fuel it should be? It put down just under 500 on the turbo and 661hp 1400 ft/lb on nitrous. I was expecting more..... On the turbo lets just say my heater box is custom, it did turn out nice with some heat reflective tape. Kevin got a 1st at Blanchard, he was happy enough so he didn't dyno, he also hasn't changed anything from last year anyways. Havn't pulled still getting laddder bars on it. There is a pull first weekend of Aug in Barryton everyone will be at.

Truck looks good.

How hard was the swap from 2wd to 4wd? Was it a bolt in job and swap of parts or did you have to weld brackets to the frame, etc...
