to drill or not to drill the frame?

Just put my BFG 315's on the stock wheels and they do rub slightly at full lock. I tried some modest off roading and couldnt get em to hit bottomed out. Overall traction seemed good in my brief outing. I last had BFG ATs a few trucks ago and those had some road whine, not bad but it was there. The new ones must be an updated design because they are dead quiet. The ride is much improved. I had the stock Michilens aired down but they were still noteably harsher. There is a little more body roll cornering but very slight. Worthy trade off for the improvement in ride IMO.

So... . Were saying my Christmas Present, due on Christmas Eve, will fit without the need for a 2" leveling kit?

Whew!

315-70R17 BFG AT's on order, waiting, waiting.....

I have yet to figure out how to reduce a picture enough to post on here without it getting nasty pixelation. I can email em if you pm your addy.

They fit perfect on my truck with no leveling kit - no rubbing that I can detect. Now that I've got them balanced properly they are great. They track as well as the stock tires, aren't noisy, have much better traction (of course), and soften the ride with the taller sidewalls. I'm running 45psi in mine so far, I may experiment with that a little. . The only thing I haven't checked yet is if one will fit up under the truck as the spare. . If so, I'm ordering a fifth.

And they do look great. :D I'll attach some pictures in a couple of minutes. .

Here's the pictures. . Personally, I think they look bigger in person than some of the pictures suggest.

Here's the link to the photo album if you want to see bigger versions or see the truck with the stock Michelin 265/70's for comparision.

Had mine match balanced and they ride very smooth. Im at 50 front 40 rear for a starting pressure. Its amazing how much tire these trucks can take without getting that monster truck look. I guess I am not the only one that liked the graphite

They are On! Perfect Fit, no rubbing lock to lock.

I Did, however, discover a broken lower bushing bolt on the front ant-roll bar. Never noticed it, been broken a while it appears.

How do they ride? Do they ride rougher than the stock tires? How about the noise? Load rating?

I have some Goodyear MTR's on my '01 now, and I was planning on buying bigger tires for my ordered '03 after it got here. I like the look, aggressiveness, load range and TRACTION of the MTR's, but they are noisier than the Goodyear ATS's that I replaced and due to the three ply sidewall, they ride rougher even after being aired down to 40. The ATS's did not have NEARLY the traction of the new MTRs, but rode GREAT and were quieter.

I would like something that has great traction, smooth ride and reasonably quiet, and is available in SMALL towns like a Goodyear, BFG, Cooper, Michelin, Bridgestone. Out here in the sticks there seems to be more Goodyear stores than others, and I've had excellent service from my local Goodyear dealer (Graham Tire). Maybe the rural availability will not be realistic for a while considering the 17" size.

They have a higher weight rating than the stock Michilens by a few pounds. Mine are as quiet as the stock rubbber and the ride is as smooth as a standard road tire. Speaking of ride those Michilens must have been pretty stiff because even my kids noticed the ride improved. The downside is mushier handling. The truck has increased body roll and squishes when braking. This isnt a huge difference but noticable. IMO the trade off in ride versus handling was worth it. In my experiance the traction of a good AT will be as good or in some cases better than a mudder everywhere except in the mudd. On the other hand there is no substitue for a good mud tire when you get in the glop.

My truck definitely rides a lot better with the new BFG's. I haven't noticed any handling problems though. All in all, an excellent tire IMHO. As far as rural availability, Sears carries BFG's last I checked.
