with just the banjo loose but not removed you are not checking the relief valve, to check it you have to take the banjo completely out and move the line away from the relief valve. The line is also the return for the cp3 and that is probably the fuel you are seeing

my 03 had the same starting problem and slowly got worse and worse and wouldnt even start after a while had to pull start it. It starting smoking more and more slowly and the injectors rattled more and more. Changed injectors and it was fine for a year then same problem again! changed injectors out 4 times and had enough! about 300,000KM at this point but enough $$$ spent on injectors! pulled the ****ty 03 isb out and put in a 98 12V! Problem solved!

I think your right, had it to a cummins shop to day, this is where I have my kenworth worked on. His computor couldn't talk to the truck because its dodge software that won't let him in, but he also thought it was an injector bleeding down, looks like it goes to dodge at some point?? Scary thought!! Thanks for your input, are you listening Kevin??

I'm installing aux pump this weekend, if that doesn't help - looks like injectors:mad:

I never researched much about injectors - cummins, injection shop, or dealer?

I'll check with a friend who works in a truck shop, see what he suggests too.

Thanks to all who have offered suggestions, times like these is when the TDR really pays off!

Kevin

I would recommend Formula1 for injectors. the dealer is going to be REAL high priced. Cummins is cheaper but still high (damn electronics!)

You send yours in to F1 and buy new tips and a rebuild for yours (Unless yours are completely destroyed). a little better performance and possibly better mileage.

Do you have a web or contact info for F1, just in case we have trouble with dealer. Have you or someone U know used their injectors???

Scrappy, are U changin because of problems , or just because?? Either way, I'd be interested on how U make out, does F1 have a core charge on the new set?? Haven't heard from Kevin, wonder how he made out with lift pump change, mayby he's still under the truck.

I am changing them out because I think they are getting worn and causing a loss of power and fuel mileage. There is no core charge, you send yours to them to be refurbished and they send yours back to you.

Andy, I got the pump in - gotta love a good fuel bath on a 90 degree day:-laf

Still pretty soon to tell for sure, but seems as if it starts better (so far) and it may just be my imagination but is seems to have a little more snort.

I was reading the latest issue of the TDR and found small article regarding injectors and cross tubes loosening - may be something else to check out.

I'm sure injectors from F1 will be in the near future, I just wish you could order a set rebuilt so truck wouldn't have to be down a week! If the problem continues, I guess that what it will take.

More updates to come... ... . Kevin

I agree on the truck being down but I also understand why they do it that way. at least this way you aren't buying others' problems.

Scrappy, good point on the injector rebuild vs exchange

Is it just me or doesn't it seem like there are alot of posts with complaints of hard starts and injector failures all the sudden? Maybe it's because im looking for related problems similar to mine or are we starting to see ulsd effects hitting us? For example, about a week ago I changed out fuel filter with only 500 miles on it and truck started great for about a day, then back to hard start again - is the pipeline "cleansing" plugging filters and trashing injectors? #@$%! Just food for thought

Kevin, still havin hard or so starts, been bout 3k since I changed filter, mayby I'll give that a try again, all the other trucks go 10k, no problem knock on woooood! Right know still at a loss till I get to a dealer, tryin to find a dealer with a good diesel mech in my area?? Got a good cummins mech, but his computor can't talk to my truck.

Well, truck has been starting (ok but not like it should) until today! Started this morning, drove to work fine - two hours later had to leave office to see some customers and NO START! Tried 4 times, probably 15-20 sec crank each time. Just got back to office (had to drive a company chevy 1/2 ton:{), still no start. Guess it's time to get serious about injectors, gonna get on the horn with F1.

Kevin, on one of my no start situations, gave the air cleaner a wiff of starting fluid and it fired up. Also made sure of no manifold heater before i did this, may help U out in your no start situations. Usin one of the other trucks till i have time to get to dealer.

Kevin, howU makin out with your no start problem, no change with mine, made apointment with a recommended dealer. His diesel mech asked me a few questions, and when he found out it was a six speed he said there was a reflash for the problem, will know more monday eve? Keep in touch

Andy, took my truck in to a local diesel shop yesterday. They just called - would only make 1200psi rail pressure while cranking then capped 2 injectors and it starts, so looks like 2 failed injectors. Hope to be back on the road tomorrow. I would guess you may be looking at same problem, I didn't know of any flash for this symptom.

Kevin, U replacin with stock units or F1, either way be interested to know how U make out. Mine still falls in the warrenty bracket, so I removed BG pump, put the dodge pump in tank, so they don't have an out. Goes to the dealer on monday. Finished doin the work on wednesday, and ever since, its been startin rather well, not like the 95,or 04, but better than its been for the last month. I think its like a kid that complains he sick, when U make the doctors appointment, all of a sudden he's better!!

Andy, just got truck back last nite. This truck has not started this good in about a year! BIG DIFFERENCE! They originally found 2 injectors, but only charged me for one - didn't have a chance to talk to tech so not sure if replaced 1 or 2? I thought about F1 injectors, but just not enough cash flow right now - so just went with Cummins reman. Great to have my truck backOo.
