Ok, I just arrived after a 750 mile run from Oregon to L. A. in my '99 CTD. It has a 47RE, 4. 10 ratio diffs , and is a 2500 SRW LB QC. I had 1500 lbs of cargo in the rear.

I ran 70-75 MPH pretty much the entire trip turning 2400-2500 RPMS. Hand calculated mileage was 18. 1 MPG. With my old 3. 54 gears I would have probably been close to 20 MPG, but turning these RPM's hurt the mileage a bit.

So it looks like there isn't much difference between the auto and stick in fule consumption. and 2x4 and 4x4

Also it seems the latter models are dooing ok with mpg's

My '04. 5 325/600 4x4 6 speed gets around 19mph commuting mostly at 65mph, 14mpg towing a 5k trailer/truck in the mountains here in AZ. Mileage seems to drop off quickly with speeds above 75mph. Best so far was 20. 0 commuting. Console reads 1 to 1. 5mpg lower than actual, it has not been re-flashed yet.

21. 5 city 17. 5 hwy 65 - 70 (damn low gearing in the G56), need a Gear Vendor's overdrive. Towing 12,000# 18 city, 15 at 55 to 65

8. 2 low 11. 2 high towing. 17. 1 low 18. 84 high empty all highway. All hand calculated. Have had the truck just 2 weeks and just broke 10,000 miles friday!! It does seem to be getting better.

when mine was stock except for the EZ on level 3 and before the tires and level kit i was getting 18-18. 4 consistently hand calculated running from sacramento to apple valley in southern california. and this was with the cruise set on exactly 80mph 90% of the way everytime and running empty. so i figured i could have gotten atleast 22-23mpg if i would have slowed down to 65. back then my computer was dead on and i showed around 23 on the overhead for a few miles before i would crank it up!

Mine doesn't make any sense yet. The truck in the sig now has 5600 miles on it. Worst mileage was 10. 62, pulling a 25' fifth wheel, cruise set on 75 (haven't weighed the trailer yet). Best is 13. 48, empty, cruise set at 65. All hand calc numbers. The overhead always shows 1. 0-1. 2 better than actual. Average overall is 13. 09. Approx 60% of miles are in light city traffic, 35-45 mph, 6 miles per trip, 4 traffic lights per trip. Love the truck, but something must be wrong!

On my 03' having the AFE Mag 7, the Edge set at level 1, and a 4" exhaust. We get on an average 12. 5 mpg pulling a 12,000lb loaded trailer. Without the trailer we are getting with mixed driving about 18 mpg. I never really have taken the truck on a trip without the trailer. We will be doing that this weekend. Since I am running 4:10 rear I am sure this makes it suffer some in the mileage department, however it is better than having a Hemi under the hood!

jglasgow... . Holy Cow!!!

Some of you guys always refer to "the mountains out here". Well, I just had the opputunity to haul over 5,000 miles, most of it "out there".

The grades are no steeper out there than the mountains "over here", just at a higher elevation producing way out of control EGT's.

When you say out of control EGT's, what are you considering out of control?

I drove all over the western US this past summer in our 03' and I really never saw much above 1200 degrees, and I never let it stay at that temp for more than a couple of minutes if possible. But I have the good habit of not pushing the truck when I see the temp getting anywhere never that figure. My goal is to never get above 1150 and I can usually stay at this. I may not go up the hill at high speed, but I don't care about that. Down shifting as soon as possible to get the temp down is key in mountain driving. It is a good idea anyway when you start going down the other side. Especailly since I do not have an exhaust brake, but I do have "Brake Guard" which helps quite a bit. :)

I live in the foothills of the Appalachains and have to try to hit 1200* empty. With a trailer and some horses I can do a 7-9% grade at 70MPH and barely hit 1250* ... ... ... ... . this is all at 2,000-4,000 ft. elevation.

Last week coming into Flagstaff heading west on I40 I had to kick the cruise off and pedal the thing a couple of times. These were unmarked grades which I assume were 3-5% or less ... ... ..... but the elevation was 6,000-7,000 feet.

Worse than I40 was coming up I17 on my return trip. There was times when my EGT gage would sweep faster than my boost gage.

I've read it, but didn't realize until I did it, how real it was ... ... . a 7% grade at 2,000 feet is worlds apart from a 7% grade at 8,000 feet.
