I was recently under the front end of my '03 checking ball joint free play (which are bad at 48,xxx miles and not covered by warranty) and I noticed oil dripping from my tach. pickup sender (between the power steering pump and harmonic balancer). My local dealer says that the injector pump is leaking oil and must be replaced($100. 00 deductable on my behalf) and a front axle u-joint and a rear pinion seal (a seperate $100. 00 deductable on my behalf) I also noticed to be faulty. Is this a freak occurance for an $1,800 pump to go bad at 48,xxx mi. or do they just wan't my $100 to tighten a loose bolt??? What model pump does an '03 H. O. have anyway?

Well, it's impossible for the injector pump to leak oil... it doesn't contain any oil. If it really is oil leaking, then it could be coming from the front gearcase, which would be A LOT cheaper to fix than an injector pump.

'03-up trucks use a Bosch CP-3 injector pump. There have been a few people on this board with '03 model trucks with CP-3's leaking fuel out of the front seal.

Maybe it is fuel? I should have smelled it first. I'm getting a little worried that these guys don't know what to do or what to tell me! I have a big cummins shop 1 mile down the road, should I let them do it next time?

Well mines a 4. 5 and its leaking fuel but I do not know from where. I can feel it on the bottom side of the pump and see it dripping off the wiring harness feeding the fan. I've looked and looked and still can't find the exact location of the leak but its definitly fuel from the injector pump.

I think ryan is correct with the leaky seal on the pump. I just wish that I could get the truck back to my place so I could mark the pump with a stamp, chisel, or punch and see if they really replace the whole thing like they said they would or if they just throw a gasket in it. I'm still confused about the ball joints wearing out before the tires?! They say that dodge won't warranty it. Would it do any good to call a customer service hotline? If so,what number should I call?

I don't think the fuel system has a deductable. Its covered 7/100. The powertrain does have a deductable of $100 its covered 7/70. call 1-800-992-1997 and inquire. Usually manufactures don't overlap deductables even if the 7/100 has one. I'd be more po'ed about the BALL JOINTS that are showing up toasted!!! Ask for assistance on THEM. Its getting to be a KNOWN problem. They need to recall THEM and the u/joints that are failing left and right.

If it is the pump leaking I don't think they can just put on a gasket. The pump has to be disassembled in a very very clean facility and I don't think dealerships are equipped to handle the work. Instead, they just replace the pump as a whole.

Zshaw,

I just started a thread a couple of days back regarding this exact subject. My pump was leaking fuel... . which I thought was oil too! My truck has 18,000 miles on it. From what the dealer told me it sounds like a ongoing problem with our trucks.
