The parking brakes need setting up on my 03 3500 dually. Does the axle and hub/rotor assembly all have to be removed to adjust parking brakes? I had a quick look and I don't see any adjusting holes.

No, you just have to remove the rear brake rotor. The parking brake is located as a drum arrangement in the center of the brake rotor.

I had another look and the only way I see to remove the rotor is to pull the axle and remove the bearing/hub assembly as the rotor is on it or am I missing something?

Not to contradict anyone. But I adjusted mine a couple of months ago.

Removed the rear wheels for better access and adjusted them through the adjuster slot in the backing plate.

(Mine is also an 03 dually)

According to the service manual all you have to do is remove the caliper adapter and pull the rotor off.

I haven't actually done the job, so I can't verify the manual's accuracy.

Thanks for the help. I have a service manual but they are not any good for this job. I found the slots. I was looking on the driver's side and that one is well concealed and also tight for space. It helps to remove the caliper assembly for that side. Right side is quick and easy. I still have a problem. The adjuster for the left side won't move. According to service manual you are supposed to lift up on adjusting tool. Can somebody confirm this? Also is there a special adjusting tool for this application? I modified the tool I had but I still can't get the adjuster to move. I have tried both ways. Ryan, when looking at the set up on the dually the rotor looks like it is a part of the whole hub assembly which would involve pulling the axle and taking off bearing retaining nut and pulling the whole thing. I may be wrong but that is how I see it. The manual seems to be for the 1500 rears as the pictures etc. are mostly 5 bolt hubs. Again thanks for the replies. One can usually get some good help here.

One star adjuster turns clockwise to adjust it the other turns counter clockwise...

If the star wheel won't turn you'll be forced to take it apart and clean it and lube the threads... my guess is that they are rusted...

When you roll the wheel, you adjust the star adjuster until the wheel drags and than back it off a couple of clicks...

This should bring the pedal back up to the top... (e-brake pedal that is)

Hope this helps...

Thanks again for the replies. I got the job done this morning. I had to buy another brake tool and cut the end off so that it would fit in the limited space. The tool right the boy bright. Next time will be much simpler.
