Dodge gives the GVW for the DRW at 16,500 but none for the SRW. Does anyone know what it might be?

98. 5 2500, 47RE 3:54

MY door sticker: GVWR 9900 on my SRW

Dodge web site:

With 3. 73 you can tow 14150

GVWR = 9900

Payload =3180

Curb wt = 6720

Curb wt front/rear = 4025/2696

GAWR front/rear = 4750/6150

GCWR = 21000

With 4. 1 you can tow 16150

GVWR = 9900

Payload = 3180

Curb wt = 6720

Curb wt front/rear = 4025/2696

GAWR front/rear = 4750/6150

GCWR = 23000

Sew, based upon the GVWR of my SRW and these figures, I need to check the tire capacity and go from there. Since I only have 2 tires and the duallyies have 4 but different wt ratings (as duals) I think that the limit is the rear tires for the SRW, but, I would use the 3. 73 wt as my max (due to state regs/etc). Know what you are looking for but the only way to get it would be to call DC with your VIN and get them to send you a letter with the ratings (we did this with the y2k's as there were the same questions but with different "builds").

EDIT: thinking about it, might not be a bad idea to get them to send me a letter with the wt's listed..... hmmmmmm

I almost inked a deal on the SRW till I happened to see the dealer tech manual and looked up the GVW and payload of the SRW. Bottom line its not a one ton its a glorified 2500. Look the stats up yourself with the dealer. :eek:

But I like my Glorified Ram 2500! ;)

Hey no argument here its a Dodge, and there are a great truck.

But DC is a little misleading with the available info on GVW and payload on the SRW. Its a great truck but its not a big butt . :D

Try

Then choose " Towing Guide "

Since you did not specify what kind of SRW, here is an example from the above site.

We need to try and get the NM group together (somewhere) as Wayne did once but I was outatown. In town more now due to the SO's med on Thursdays. Gonna try and head for Heron Lake this weekend (probably Sunday).

weight ratings

the only difference betweena 2500 and a 3500 is the tires( at least on a 2nd. gen ). the axles and springs are exactly the same, with the 2500 being limited by the tires and the 3500 by axles or springs. I don't see how that has changed much for 3rd. gen. JMHO.

The 3500 SRW has overload springs and the 2500 does not

6150 lbs GAWR means that you need a 3075 lb tire minimum, and they ship stock with a 3195 lb tire (265/70 17 E). thats cutting it mighty close if you ask me. 500 lbs of margin per axle would have been better, but they're at about half that at 240lbs margin.

What I find interesting is that for those of use who like 33" BFG AT KO's, the 285/70 17 "D" rated tire is also a 3195 lb tire.

Bigger brake calipers on the 3500 as well.

Dean

very cool! so the pads and calipers are different, and the rotors are the same as 2500? to be sure the 3500 has got to have better stopping power, but I hope that doesn't mean that the rotors just wear out sooner :)

weight ratings

My 2500 has the camper prep package that includes the overloads. Yes the wheel cylinders are bigger on the dually, but that doesn't affect the weight rating directly. ( might take a little longer to stop though)

I did not realize that the 2003 - 2500 had overloads.

Thanks for the info

Ken

His 2500 is an 01. But the 03's do have overloads -- not certain but I think its a single leaf. the difference is that the overloads are stiffer on the 3500 and two leaves. of course the 3500 main springs are actually softer than the main springs of the 2500.

It's my understanding that the braking does factor in to the manufacturer's weight rating along with the suspension, etc.
