Bob, did you get your smog check yet? I need to get mine done this week... my truck came from the factory with no cat, wonder if it will pass???

Mine is not due until March, 6 months yet. Keep me posted with your results.

As the originator of this ^%$ post, I just recently smoged my 04. 5 bringing it from Nevada to Cali finally. The tech fumbled around with the cat issue with me until he looked in the magic book and discovered that the 04. 5 FED emission did not come with a cat but the beehive smoke reducer. I had replaced that with a faux short muffler. Anyhow he looked over the truck briefly, ignored the disconnected programmer, and had me blip the throttle for the visible smoke test. I do not have upgraded injectors but have changed the exhaust. I passed and gave Arnold and Pelosi and fat registration check.

Elite1... ..... PM me and I can give you info on the guy who smoged my truck. I am in Ventura County as well. My brother in law smoged his truck and the guy never lifted the hood. That's handy.

Yes. The tech asked me to blip the throttle while he watched for smoke from the exhaust tip. According to CA smog requirements, the smog station should also be looking for aftermarket equipment that does not conform to CARB requirements and/or does not have an E. O. # (Executive Order). That is going to be a lot of exhaust system mufflers and intakes.

See the CA smog check manual page 12 for aftermarket equipment info.

My truck too is cat-less, FED standard, and did not come with the "beehive smoke reducer", but I did remove the muffler. I wonder if I need to remove the eliminator pipe and install an aftermarket muffler for this test ? ? ?

The diesel smog test is:

Connect to computer for error codes.

(older diesel cars - the "Check Engine" Light is a fail)

Look under hood (nobody has really told the techs what they are looking for - supposedly aftermarket stuff).

Bip the throttle three times - watch for excessive smoke (nobody has told the techs what "excessive" is).

Soooooo (last I heard) the techs haven't been given a lot of guidelines.

For the Ventura County / L. A. County border (Canyon Country, Santa Clarita).

Call "Smog Lab". (661) 299-1787 (Smog Test Station)

Ask for Rod (the owner).

Super Gas (Bracket II - 9. 90 ET) racer. Good guy.

His tow vehicle is an '03 "other brand" (LOL!) diesel pickup.

Ask him your questions.

He will give you straight (honest) answers.
