Howdy all

Here's some info on my fuel milage that I'm getting on my 04. 5 6spd 4. 10 diff

running empty back and forth to work... .....

odometer start 21mi

1st tank 434mi. used 31. 6 gal 13. 69mpg50% hwy

2nd tank 511mi. used 34. 3 gal 14. 89mpg 95% hwy at 70mph

3rd tank 582mi. used 34. 0 gal 17. 11mpg 90% hwy at 65mph

4th tank 649mi. used 33. 0 gal 19. 66mpg 95% hwy at 60mph

5th tank 655mi. used 32. 8 gal 19. 96mpg 95% hwy at 63 mph

I will going to utah pulling my 5ver with 2 quads. I will let ya'all know what I get

started out 10. 3 on 1st tank. Avg about 11. 8, spent 1 week in shop now up to an outstanding 12. 9 total miles so far 4300.

not happy about fuel milage but love truck. old 01 6spd. got 15. 5 driving exactly same way

Just my . 02,

I'm getting a consistent 18. 0-18. 5 mpg with mine, lately about 40% highway. That's calculated manually cuz I don't have the overhead trip comp.

Of course 3. 73's and 2,000 rpm shifts probably help.

:)

I get 16mpg with my 2004. 5 with al kinds of driving. I have 3200 miles on the engine. I expect mpg to increase as highway use increases. 3500 6speed 04. 5

I'm seeing 22-25mpg without the AC on and empty of course. Varied driving situations. Have noted that the AC really hurts the mileage more than I thought it would.

PNeuzil... That's interesting that your mileage suffers when your A/C is on, it barely affects mine. It's probably along the same lines as "why do some trucks get 24mpg and some only get 12"? These Dodge Cummins rigs are hard to figure out sometimes, especially the gee whiz stuff like mpg's. I'm extremely happy with mine as I get upwards of 23 on the highway (60-65 mph)and between 16 and 17 in town (2000 rpm shifts).

I update it when I refill diesel. I've found that speed really hurts mileage. And since that directly relates to RPM's, I see anything above 2000 rpms my mileage drops like a rock. 1800 - 2000 seems to be the sweet spot.

Just lifted my rig with 315's. Curious what that will do... .

my milage was figured like i drive everyday on my old truck the same as new truck. my 01 got 15. 5 empty. 04. 5 is terrible haven't even pulled anything yet. drive more like 23 year old than 75 year old. Don't see the need to figure mileage that is not how you drive all the time. my wife says I am the biggest kid in the house at 39

Well knewman, I gotcha beat 46 drive like i'm 16, can't help it, this truck is just too much fun, I'm gettin about 13. If anyone ever figures out a way to manage the egt that the Va creates it'll probably drop to 10. hahahahahahahaha

i agree with the 2000rpm observation, with little to slight headwind @ 74mph on interstate averaged 14. 5mpg on recent trip pulling small pop-up camper and wood and gear in box(total load est=700lbs) but on previous tank got my first 20mpg reading with average speeds approx 50mph cruising along Minnesota's North Shore Drive

I have been getting around 18 MPG keeping it mostly around 2000 RPM's but today I made a 250 mile trip at 2200-2400 RPM's and I got 15. 56 MPG. Anything over 2000 r's murders mileage. Then again I just made some mods to make my turbo sing to me and I have really been enjoying the sound==could have some effect on MPG's.

04.5 MPG

I have been running most of the time with a 4000 lb camper on the truck. I took it off the other day & today I made a 450 mile trip. One way I drove 60 mph & the computer read 17. 4 mpg. On the return trip without reseting the computer & driving at 55 mph the computer reading went up to 18 mpg by the time I got home. I filled up & hand calculated 18. 4 mpg for the whole trip.

I have 6126 miles on the truck since Febr 2 with two thirds of that hauling the camper & my cumulative mpg since purchase of the truck is 14. 2 mpg. I normally get 12 to 14 mpg when the camper is on the truck.

I am hoping the milage will continue to improve. I would like to see at least 20 mpg empty & 15 mpg with the camper. Not sure if that is possible though.

As others have said, speed greatly affects the mpg one gets.

I don't think the 04. 5 CTD will ever match the milage on the earlier models.

Big Rig

17. 9 best HC, 13. 4 worst HC pulling 7000+ lb snowmoblile trailer over donner summit (sea level to 7238 ft. ). about 15 50/50 hwy city with the TST now, (but thats worth it!).

So far I have gotten:

9. 96 pulling my Jeep across I-68 up and down 6% grades "balls to the wall. "

12. 5 pulling the Jeep home across the PA turnpike taking it easy through the road construction.

15. 5 - 16. 0 driving empty 50/50 highway/city.

In under 3 weeks I have 2800 miles on it. I am kicking myself for not getting a DRW 6spd now though.

The trip with the Jeep the total weight of the truck, trailer, Jeep, 2 guys, and all our stuff was 16,800.

Mine started out at 15. 2 MPG. Was avg. 16. 5 MPG until I added a tonneau cover. Now I’m getting 17. 8 MPG driving a combination of highway and city. Now I have about 29000 miles. Just got back from a trip to the East Coast through the mountains pulling a 37' 9000# travel trailer. Avg. 12. 5 MPG and did not have to down shift to clear the mountain.

I just filled up again yesterday. I pulled 576. 7 miles and put 35. 2 gallons in the tank. I filled to the top of the neck both times. That comes out to 16. 3 mpg on that tank. I still had 45-50 miles left according to the overhead. I am now up to about 3300 miles, so I can see a definite improvement from tank to tank. The overhead is now off in relation to my hand calculations though. Overhead said I was at 15. 7 mpg.

I've got just short of 2000 miles on my 04. 5 and i'm averaging about 13. 5 mpg. Thats mostly small town stop and go driving.

Just passed 1000 miles and get hand calculated 17. 3 MPG and computer shows 16. 0 MPG. This is all in-city stop-and-go driving.
