04 steering box

My steering box finally started leaking after 328,000 miles. Does everyone like the new up-graded box from Dodge? I still run the old style linkage. Will the new box bolt up without mods? I understand it comes with a new rod end. Is this for new or old style linkage? Thanks, Jeff

You should probably upgrade the linkage at the same time. I am not sure if there is a tie rod end to mate the new box to the old linkage. There is an end to mate the new linkage to the old style box though. The pitman arm has to be changed as the new box has a much larger sector shaft.

Given the cost and having to upgrade the linkage, the fact that you probably will have to upgrade the pump, and some of the weird issues with the new box, you might want to consider a Borgeson or Redhead steering box. The new box is a beefy monster but if you don't need it it may not be worth the cost of it and the other requirments. The box itself is over $600, linkage is around $300, and a new PS pump is over $300 buying wholesale.

A replacement Borgeson or Redhead will run $400-500. You choice.

Has your pump been done? Seems like it's a rite of passage, like injectors, and seeing your number, just curious.

The pump made enough pressure to blow the sector shaft seal. I've never had a steering problem, even with a 9ft VXT plow on front. Box still steers well, just leaks like cow wettin on a flat rock.

Yes, it comes with a new pitman arm but it may not be the correct size for tie rod end. The 08. 5+ steering has larger tie rod ends than the earlier trucks. I am not sure if they make a larger end with the smaller threads for the linkage. You would need to check that or you will end up with no recourse but to upgrade linkage.

A worn seal will blow with less than adequate pressure from age and wear, that is no indication of how good the pressure is. The later PS pumps are upgraded and I believe the larger box requires a higher flowing pump to work correctly. You could run into an issue where you replace the box and be forced to replace the pump because it will not handle the needs of the new box.

That was an attempt at humor. I know why seals blow. The kit also comes with a replacement tie rod end. I had been hoping to hear from someone with first hand knowledge of the new box as a replacement, not speculation. Yes it is the original pump. Remember, we never hear about the trucks that go long term with no problems.

I downloaded the installation instructions from Dodge for the new box. It says all 03-04 trucks need the new style linkage to fit. Guess I'll call Red Head and see how long to get one of theirs. Thanks to whoever took the time to post the link for the install instructions.

As a possible lower cost alternative to getting the bigger Mopar box, I read on another site where someone with an 04 bought the bigger 09 rebuilt steering gear from Redhead, sourced a used lower half of the steering shaft (needed to link up to an 09 box) and a pitman arm. I wish I saved the link.

I just installed the new setup on my 06... the steering box comes with a link to use on the y style of linkage. I also installed the new setup for linkage t style and didn't need the part that came in the box. Honestly I didn't gain as much control back as I wanted but no more leaks. I do feel that my steering is a little heavier then before... need to check tire psi and PS fluid again, first trip driving it today.

Been away for a few days. While I was gone, USPS delivered a Red Head rebuilt steering box. I just finished the installation. No leaks and seems to drive fine. Thanks to all for your advice.
