When out looking at trucks to buy, what's the easiest way to quickly tell whether it's an o4 or a 04. 5?

I belive 04 is 305hp and 04. 5 is 325hp, if Im wrong I will be corrected quickly...

Build date for 04. 5 is Jan 04 or later also the valve cover will say 325 hp

The '04. 5 will also have a catalytic converter. The '03-04 (305 HP) is the one you want.

My 04. 5 has 4" exhaust, does the 04?

My old 01 had 3".

The easiest way is the engine data plate... 325HP is the 04. 5, 305HP is the 04.



Exhausts can be changed, cats tend to run away, etc. Build dates are tricky, when the "conversion" year is being done, things can get mixed up for the first few months. Probably the absolute best way would be to have the dealer run the VIN... that will tell you what engine (I believe they term it "600TQ Cummins" in their build sheet).
