Im looking to buy a exhaust brake for my 05 CTD w/auto trans. . going out west this summer towing my 5er to Utah,Colorado,South Dakota... I like Pac and BD,and both are well liked here. . so which works better with a 05 automatic, if I need to make a LU switch I will or use their Lu boxes... ...

Remember that for your auto, you'll need to modify the transmission and torque converter to lock them up during de-acceleration.

Go to both PacBrakes and BD's web sight and check them out... All of the products that PacBrake offers are designed by PacBrake engineers and they've been around for years...

Hope this helps. .

The more I read and search through the forums the BD and pac look good. . now its see which one will fit my needs, $$ is also a factor for me, have 1200$ to spend now, unless I wait til next month and have a few more bucks saved up. . just want to do it once and right. . 23,000# is alot to slow down and stop with!

well if that's the case you can do the BD one but i would suggest running some sort of transmission controller to increase line pressure and control down shifts.

I went through this last fall. My weight towing is like yours. I was unwilling to pull Highway 5 to LA (the Grapevine) again without an exhaust brake. I just couldn't take the downhill terror.

I already had the BD Overdrive Lockout for mountain driving. My shop, now Left Coast Diesel, recommended the PacBrake with Pac Brake's controller. So, I went for it and haven't looked back. It really works. Plus, you get on-board air for tires and other uses, a side benefit.

Good luck!

Hmmmmmm - I have done I-5 several times with approx the same load (5th wheel).
Done Loveland Pass - even "old" US Highway 6 - (12K feet)
without an EB.

I would "prefer" to have an EB - but don't consider it a necessity.
(regular -30K miles- front brake pads are, however - LOL)

IMO - carefully look into warranty "ramifications" and make your decision/s on what you prefer to believe.

I run the jake brake this was tester on the cummins eng. I have nothing but good things to say about it. I am close to 19. 000lb I run the rockies and smokies mountains it has always done a great job. Came acrose inter state 8 from San Diego to Tucson AZ that is one big drop Also one big pull to the top!! Saved a lought of braking ---BEN

because of the way bd or pack controls back pressure they work 2x better than jake or banks and no troublesome failures of the vacuum pump we run a fleet and as the pumps fail we change them to bd's

It also depends on how and where you drive. Im camping in Lake Placid,NY this week and on the back county rds there are some mountains here that can smoke your brakes if not careful. . is there anyone here that has a Banks EB? what are you thoughts on the kit with the new controler they have for it? from what Ive read it controls Dn shifting/lu and with line pressure,I just dont like the Vac pump idea. . with Pac you can use air horns, airbags. can you do the same with BD? I dont think you get an air tank with BD.

What is the cost of having the vacuum replaced on the jake brake? I need to find someone close that can do this for me. Any ideas??

Okie

I run the Pac PRXB and think it is a top notch unit AND it WORKS! Mine is a stick but if I had an auto, I would put the switch on the shift selector stalk. I have the switch on my 6spd shifter and it is nice to be able to select if I want to have the brake working on decell or not. I went west on I-80, Donner pass and never touched the service brakes on the down hill. I used 5th and 6th gear.

i have a preference of the bd over the pac because of where the compressor mounts. but like i said earlier bd and pac are the only two good ones on the market.

You can buy the vacuum pump from a Cummins dealer for around $100 and anyone with simple tools and skills can replace it. My first OEM pump failed in the 60k mile range. The replacement was still going stong at 230k miles when I sold the truck.

I don't like the engine mount also, so I move it to the TIPM, if you look closely the compressor has the old style relay and valve, it has been upgraded to the new style Valve and relay but same compressor from 5 years ago. It’s always on, also the original elbow brake has been changed to the PRXB. It stays much cooler here and you barely hear it running.

I have BD and will buy another. I can hold a 7% grade for several miles at 35 mph with our 36', 15k trailer pushing my truck all the way.

I just don't like the idea of having a variable size hole in the butterfly like all the other brands have; Another part to wear out.
