I know State Farm will pay out for what comparable vehicles go for in your area, not off book. Unfortunately I know that too well

No insurance company pays for total loss calculation off the internet value sites like KBB or NADA and the source they use is always considerably below the bs found on KBB and NADA.

Auto dealers don't use KBB or NADA either. They use black book and never pay book value as trade-in values.

Like I said above - all prices are in current inflation dollars. Inflation is up significantly since January 2009.

Back when I bought my truck (it was 34 on a 42 sticker- I think I got an ok deal) family and friends thought I was nuts for doing it. A pick up truck for HOW MUCH?! One of them spent the same thing for a toyota Avalon weeks before- and that was wise. I got to thinking, and then I shut them down. I said that I like to buy vehicles by the pound- you know- like cold cuts. $34000 into 7000 pounds is a way better deal than $34000 into 3500 pounds. That truck in the OP is a lot of money- hard to justify for a used veh, but it's legendary.

when people ask me why i've kept my early 2004 stock, and clean, this post is exactly why. 76,000 miles as of today. i have recently been flirting with the idea of selling, and after seeing this, the 22k i was going to list seems a bit low. i checked KBB a few weeks ago, and it showed 24xxx for excellent and 21xxx for "good". they truly do hold their value.

One thing I have been considering with mine... . IF the new 13 models are a hit and they get the fuel mileage back up to somewhat comparable..... I believe the "mystique" of the 04-06 CR 5. 9Ls will lose some of their luster. .
In EVERY way, the 4th gen trucks are light years ahead of the 3rd gens in comfort, style, quality..... just have what many consider to be completely unacceptable fuel mileage.
Only thing holding up the value of my truck is the big C under the hood, its not the Ram on the grille. Just my opinion. .

Bill, I have seriously thought of selling my truck, but like you, I have no clue what I would replace it with. I would be seriously torn between a new Ram diesel or F350 with the V-10. fuel mileage vs. initial costs and maintenance. .

No more than I drive a truck now and don't tow, gasoline power is a viable alternative for me too. It has worked well for my brother. The fuel mileage between the Ram 2500 Hemi and the Ford F250 with the 6. 4L that he traded in is about the same. However, the initial cost of the Hemi was lower and the maintenance costs are much lower.

Agreed. I'm trying to keep my '03 as well maintained as possible so it will last another 20 years (at least). Owning a newer model with the emissions equipment and reduced fuel economy does not interest me in the least.

If I ever have to replace it due to being totaled I would have a difficult time finding something similar.

You guys are slowly convincing me to keep my '05. I was seriously considering ordering a 2014 and my biggest concern is that it has to stay outside because it's too long to fit in my garage.

My '05 handles all it's chores perfectly and only has 78K on the odometer. Maybe I'll wait a little longer to see how all the pollution gear, mileage and reliability shakes out and then maybe get a '15 or '16. I know that unless I crash or have a catastrophic engine failure, I could probably make my '05 last the rest of my RVing life.

I have to agree with you guys, the mpg of my '04. 5 (Wish I'd got off my duff & ordered a month earlier!) is what keeps me in mine. Kinda wish I'd ordered a 3500 SRW, but was trying to keep the payments lower... .

Just as a point of information, the V10 is no longer used in the pickup chassis. It is replaced by the "Boss" 6. 2 litre engine. The V10 is still used in the 450/550 series C&C trucks, however.

When was your '04. 5 built? We bought the very first one that showed up at our local dealer. I'd have to go out and look, but I'm almost positive it was a Jan '04 build. It's getting a little long in the tooth and has been basically left to plow truck duty at this point, but has been one heck of a good truck for what we have put it through.

01/04 is the Born on date...

I had a early 04. 5 I bought in April of 04, not sure of the born on date though. It was so new, the Shop Manual I bought for it didn't have the new engine in it. The dealer only could tell me it was the new "600 Cummins" but no towing info or GVWR or GCVWR and the salesman didn't know anything about it. But with the NV5600 and a test drive, I didn't care about the fact there was no info. But you have to keep in mind, no HO engines in California were allowed until the 04. 5 showed up here, I believe that was the reason the sales staff didn't have a clue when they showed up here. IMHO, I believe this was best cummins engine, I don't like the complexity of my 6. 7, and it is a less restricted engine being the C&C 305 HP version.

I was looking for a new 2013 3500 DRW at a couple of dealers yesterday to test drive, and none to be found. The salesman told me the 4:10/3:73 gear restrictions still in effect has slowed the production down, but he said he could order one, :) but it would only be available with the 3:42 rear . I told him I'm in no hurry and what a mistake that would be with a 3:42. Were now in mid year production, there should be lots full of them. I guess you can chalk up more loss of business to CAFE standards. But I forgot were from the land of the free.

ewww january 1, 2004 is the date the CC and 3rd injection event were added... my motor (truck) was built 9/19/03. this will be my last diesel, due to the emissions stranglehold put on them by the federal government, and the additional taxes on fuel. truthfully, if i am going to drive a truck that gets 12-14 mpg, i'll pay . 65 less a gallon doing it. . the 3rd gens are a nice truck inside, i've never seen the interior of a 4th close up, but i can assure you its niceness doesn't make up for the atrocious mileage. the "good old days" are over. .

$38,000 of today's inflated dollars have significantly less buying power than the dollar of 2005. The current government doesn't allow accurate reporting of inflation but it is huge.

Agreed Harvey, how can fuel prices double and there be no inflation?

Wonder what would happen if you installed a ECM from a pre '04. 5 Dodge/Cummins?

IIRC, on the '04 and '04. 5 trucks, (even the 235HP NY and CA trucks), the ECM also replaces the body computer that was used on the '03's. I suppose it could be done if you could adapt the body computer and wiring harness from an earlier truck, but I doubt the benefit would justify the work.

The 04. 5 has slightly different engine internals, I believe it has different valve seats designed for the higher EGT and piston shape for the different injection spray pattern. I don't think you would want to do the ECM change, it could melt your pistons?

I think you are confused-the instrument cluster-act as the body controller on the 3rd gens. You may be thinking of the power train controller
