Bill, I have seriously thought of selling my truck, but like you, I have no clue what I would replace it with. I would be seriously torn between a new Ram diesel or F350 with the V-10. fuel mileage vs. initial costs and maintenance. .
when people ask me why i've kept my early 2004 stock, and clean, this post is exactly why. 76,000 miles as of today. i have recently been flirting with the idea of selling, and after seeing this, the 22k i was going to list seems a bit low. i checked KBB a few weeks ago, and it showed 24xxx for excellent and 21xxx for "good". they truly do hold their value.
I have to agree with you guys, the mpg of my '04. 5 (Wish I'd got off my duff & ordered a month earlier!) is what keeps me in mine. Kinda wish I'd ordered a 3500 SRW, but was trying to keep the payments lower... .
01/04 is the Born on date...When was your '04. 5 built? We bought the very first one that showed up at our local dealer. I'd have to go out and look, but I'm almost positive it was a Jan '04 build. It's getting a little long in the tooth and has been basically left to plow truck duty at this point, but has been one heck of a good truck for what we have put it through.
$38,000 of today's inflated dollars have significantly less buying power than the dollar of 2005. The current government doesn't allow accurate reporting of inflation but it is huge.
Wonder what would happen if you installed a ECM from a pre '04. 5 Dodge/Cummins?
IIRC, on the '04 and '04. 5 trucks, (even the 235HP NY and CA trucks), the ECM also replaces the body computer that was used on the '03's. I suppose it could be done if you could adapt the body computer and wiring harness from an earlier truck, but I doubt the benefit would justify the work.
