Does the noise mean I am going to experience early failure of my SBC? I replaced my DMF with an SBC last year. Can you post pictures of the differences in the old style units VS the newer units Peter?

No it will not fail. Actually the ones that make the noise are a heavier design but because the amount of free travel is less, some may result in nutral noise.

We just installed a SB dual disc in my friend's truck and it is a great clutch. Only downfall is heavy clutch pedal which is expected and you can get used to, and the same noise everyone is talking about. At idle it sounds like there are bearings and gears in a blender inside of the trans. . Guess its just one of those things you have to deal with if you want a clutch which will hold to high hp and tq. We installed this clutch two months ago.

That's an excellent description of the sound; I was hoping that the sound I have is unusual (sort of... if it wasn't then I had a problem - and I don't need problems!); apparently not. I can live with it since it's only at idle. - Peter (if you see this), is the newest design quieter than the above description?

Mine makes the very same noises and it doesn't sound good. Only at an idle and also when rolling in gear at an idle. I just installed my OFE 2 weeks ago and it works great. Its a little grabby but it hooks up. Its just the idle noise that is messing with my head. The idle noise is definitely louder when the transmission is cold and gets quieter as it warms up but does not go away. As long as nothing is wrong I can live with the noise.

I had an SBC dual disk installed about three weeks ago. Same noise at idle, in neutral with clutch out. I also have a different noise when engaging: as the clutch starts to grab, there is a fairly high-pitched "irrrk" sound, sort of like when a machine tool takes too big a bite on a piece of steel. It sounds like steel-on-steel. It only lasts for an instant, and only occurs when you're letting the clutch out fairly quick. If you are very cautious and let the clutch out s-l-o-w-l-y, there's no sound.

Is this "irrrk" sound normal?

had my 3250 installed 2 mo. ago i love it. it is allso noisy @ idle with clutch released in neutral. also noisy @ lower rpms 1350 and below.

MSchnieder:

Like you, I love the way it works, and I can put up with the noise. I'm just wondering if that "irrk" sound is normal. Does your 3250 make a different sound when the surfaces clamp up?

I feel there's a huge market for a beefed up DMF clutch that would be as quiet as stock but had more holding power. The stocker is a quiet as our Accord. I've driven MSchneider's truck and the 3250 DD is not nearly as noisy at idle as other DD's I've heard. Even with the clutch noise the rig is still quieter than a 24 valve at idle.

I wouldn't have a DMF again if it were free.

For a while I had been thinking that my injectors were bad again with shake at idle.

But not anymore, I have the solid flywheel and the new SBC OFE, absolutly no shake at an idle, and no noise from the clutch.

Everybody on here always said drive the truck like you stole it to clean up the injectors, but everytime I did that the vibration would get worse. Found out it was just the DMF.

That's encouraging. There's two designs available in the OFE I'm told. You must have the quieter, albeit slightly weaker one. How is the engagement at idle? Some owners have said you must increase rpm's. Reverse engagement? Thanks.

I have backed many trailors and wagons with it. It isn't a problem.

When I had my second gen 96 I installed a heavy duty clutch in it.

I hated that one because it was really jumpy when tring to slip it.

The South Bend isn't like that at all. When you let it out it takes hold right now. but, you can feather it with out all the grabby jerking around.

And it holds everything I can put to it. Flux 1 injectors and Smarty on 9

I am a believer

i dont haave an irrk noise while ingaging the clutch. just a slight hopping/jerking when the clutches ingage. all in all im very pleased with the clutch and the shop that did th install. Rays Trans in Lakeside ,Ca
