Has anyone had this happen? I think it's a safety for the truck to warn you to shut door. Often when hooking up my boat I will hop in and out of the truck to check hitch and trailer for hook up. Sometimes I don't always shut the door because I'll be getting right back out. Can you bipass the alarm? It's making me nuts!

It's a safety alarm that sounds when your door is open and the truck is not in park.

They've even issued a recall to apply this to the earlier model 3rd Gen trucks. That's one recall that won't get done on my truck...

I just had the recall repair done on my 2003 3500 48RE yesterday. If the transmission is in reverse, the driver's door is open, and your foot is not on the brake, the horn will sound and the lights will flash. It's Dodge's response to a couple of accidents where the driver thought the truck was in park, but it was actually still in reverse -- the driver got out, walked around behind the truck, and was struck by the truck as it moved in reverse.

yeah this is about the dumbest thing going... . it's a real pain hooking up my trailer due to is so I end up dragging the brakes just so I can back up and not close the door... STUPID!

This is one of the stupidest safety "features" I have ever seen! I was backing out of a parking space near a steep cliff at Yellowstone National Park on Sunday and I didnt have the door shut all of the way. THe horn made two blasts just as some old codger was standing up on the 2' rock wall to get a better picture of an eagle he very nearly fell off. He was ****** at me and I didnt know WTH was causing it until my wife saw the door adjar light on.

WE HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO DISABLE THIS IDIOTIC "FEATURE"!!

There are three ways to turn it "off" ...

  • close the door
  • foot on brake
  • seat belt buckled

At least theat is according to my 06 manual. I know it scared me the first time it happened. The people walking out of church across the street were not to happy either.

Well, it was kinda funny watching the car wash guy back up from the area where they pull trucks up on to let the bed drain, in front were his buddies eating lunch and it spooked them, and it spooked the driver that he slammed on the brakes and looked around to try to figure out what happened. The thing I do is buckle the belt and but it behind me during moves that require me to stick myself out the door to back up, like trailer hook up, etc etc.

Park indicator recall - Don't Do It

I had the safety recall applied to my 2004. 5 and it is the most annoying thing ever. Also buckling the seat belt behind your does not help. So far the only thing I have found that works is either closing the door (what a pain when hooking up the trailer) or riding the brake, keeping the brake lights lit. The has to be a way to override it or just turn it off.

I had it done to my 2003 two weeks ago, and buckling the seat belt does work on mine, in addition to foot on brake or driver's door closed. I wonder if your dealer forgot to do part of the mod?

go to the wrecking yard, hunt around until you find a compatible seat belt buckle. cut the belt off, whenever you are going to back up with the door open pop in the spare buckle. problem solved. j

Are you sure? try this: open door just a crack, put truck in reverse, release brake and start backing up without your seat belt on... (i'm not so sure the seatbelt matters, I'll hafta do an experiment)

More "good" news about !

I just spoke with my nearest Dodge dealer concerning my negative acceptance of the installation of an out-of-park alarm system who told me that... "Unless I authorize them to perform this modification mandated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, they (the "dealer") will not honor of perform any warranty service on my 2003 Ram 3500 DRW truck. "

Has anyone else been advised of this DCC issued edict? If so, what did you do about it? Were you refused warranty service even though you were willing to sign a "hold harmless release/agreement"? Should I seek further satisfaction from DCC or should I seek legal advice from an attorney?

Thanks for any input!!

Mine a automatic and the horn does not blow with the door open

You guys are pulling my leg. I open the door and put the truck In reverse and nothing happen only back up. You guys are nuts.

Ok, I tried it again. Horn WILL go off WITHOUT the seat belt fastened. Plug the belt in and put it behind me while backing, it WILL NOT GO OFF. That's how I hook up my trailer now.

My dealer told me I had no choice in it and did the out of park alarm flash when I had my truck in for something else. :(

Arggghhh! This is the most STUPID 'safety' feature ever. It scared the crap out of me the first time it happened, I thought I had bumped the horn by accident. Then it started honking like crazy.

My 2004. 5 didn't do this, the 2006 does. Its very annoying, especially for those of us that open the door to back up for loading. Gotta be a way around it.
