I'm considering buying an '06 factory NAV radio off of ebay for my new truck. The current SLT 1-disk radio is pretty lame, especially since it doesn't even show the artist/title for Sirius satellite radio.

Anyone have comments regarding the factory NAV in the 2006 trucks?

We have that unit in our Commander. I am overall very pleased with it. The display is quite good, and the mapping software seems adeqoute. However, when used for turn by tunr direction to rural areas it will get to a point where it simply shows the destination and you have to figure it out from there.

The siruius display shows four line of info including the station and artist info. It is also a 6 dish changer and has MP3 capability. I iwsh I could retorfit this to my 05.

Can the unit be zoomed in, map moved around, etc. . while the vehicle is moving? Those are nice features, to 'look ahead' when on a road trip.

Factory Navigation +++++

Nine -

My Girlfriend ordered the NAV system in her '06, which she has had for 1 month now, and here she is to tell you what she thinks of it:

I have never used a navigation system before so I don't have much to compare it to. The screen size and brightness of it makes it very easy to see. The functionality of it is very easy to understand and program. There is a toggle switch that allows you to move right, left, up, and down so that you can see in all directions on the map it provides. I have lived in NY for 3 years and I have to say that I have been very hesitant to go places on my own. I have found myself going more places very much out of the norm and having this navigation system there makes me feel very confident. I have also found that it gives you the quickest way to get somewhere instead of the scenic route. If I had to order the truck again, I would not hesitate on putting this navigation system in.

Hope you like it!

Yes, you can manipulate the map while you are moving. Also, if you make a wrong turn, it does not require you to turn around - it automatically recalculates the route. We have used it in both rural areas (like where we live), and urban settings, and it works equally well in both. We have not encountered the situation that TRAINS describes above - we have found it to be VERY detailed from start to finish on any trip so far.

I have one in my 06 Megacab and find that the audio system with nav, as well as the video system are all top shelf. I am pleased with the performance of this complete system. Yes, I would recommend it.

The factory installed nav looks gr8 but if ur planning on keeping truck very long there is no way to update it for changes in road systems. The Garmin C-330 I have is updated off the internet. There have been 3 updates since I purchased it bout 9 months ago. A good place to check the different models out is www.gpsnow.com Their prices were way better than any other site I found & local retail was even worse.

Wouldnt you just be able to purchase an updated DVD to get new maps whenever they are released?

I am very happy with my nav unit. It has made traveling much easier with no shotgun rider to do the map stuff. I would order it in my next vehicle in a minute.

As far as upgrading, I asked about this at my dealership, and they told me that I would be able to purchase an upgrade disc as they become available. So, my next question was about the interval plans, and they told me they had expectations of annual upgrades as each model year came out. I also questioned if they felt this unit would become obsolete over the next few years, and they told me that the basic unit regarding the nav would pretty much stay the same and any upgrades to the mapping and features would take existing units and their capabilities in mind.

I love mine.

Okay first you asked for some negatives. But before I get to that I really like mine glad I bought it. Nav can be updated with disc purchase but they are not cheap. So the negatives it does not do well with rural settings and the biggest problem to the point of driving me a little nuts is input for the system is a joystick what a pain. All info requests are put in from the stick. If it was touch screen it would be perfect in my opion

I have the nav system in my '06... just bought the truck this week.

I LOVE the system. Great stuff! Easy to use; found the streets I needed when registering the truck in downtown Sumter, etc. Never steered me wrong.

Only thing I didn't like is that it doesn't know my home address... 6285 is our house number, but our location registers as 6190 on the nav system.

Oh well... it works very well. Directions while driving are awesome--great graphics and verbal accompaniment.

I love mine and think it is worth the money. I actually rely on it too much. I find the time to destination is really great, and very accurate. Update discs are available for $150 but unless you are in a real growth area I think you should be able to get by for a few years on the original DVD.

The joystick is not as convenient as a touch screen would be, but the display is big and bright, and has other nice features that compliment the Sirius.

Mapping is the responsibility of your State, County, Local Planning and/or Taxation office. Large Counties or Large Citites usually have their own people doing the mapping, some use their building inspectors and some actually have a specific employee. There are also Mapping Service companies that perform the work. The Federal Gov did all the Forest and Park mapping. I believe that Garmin offers the service as well. The information on gas/fueling stations along the routes was done by all the oil companies. UPS, FedEx - all the carriers also give updated mapping information. Truly a big project that is growing every day.

My area recently did a 911 update to location and addressing. Where we had duplicate road/street names some of our roads got new names to end 911 confusion. My road was re-named a year ago, my system still shows the old name. My UPS guy tells me his mapping still shows the old name as well. I guess no matter how much we would like to see things current, it may be that upgrading could still reflect old information until whomever is responsible for putting out the right information actually gets it done.

NAV is nice!! I do not use it much but will when we start traveling. My daughter has pulled their TT to a couple different camp grounds. Both times they put the street address that was on the web for the campgrounds and NAV showed/talked them into the camp grounds.

Question: My time to destination didn't work on my trip home from the dealer. Any ideas why not?

Thank you,

Mike
