'08 exhaust brake - how does it work?

I drove it today at noon time and all was good, no problems.

At 5:00 my Father-in-law started it to take it home and when it fired it stumbled and the RPM's went up and down a couple times. Then it idled with what he said was a miss.

He put his fut on the go pedal and it would only rev to 1,200RPM. Then he called me, He tried it again and it would rev to 2,500 RPM. *he!!* I had no idea what was wrong, there was no check engine light on. I told him to drive it home easy, heck it's under warranty.

It made it home and I drove out to his place tonight and looked at it. The oil is a bit high, but I think that's because he put in 3 gallons of oil without changing the filter once, we pulled the filter later on but it was still a bit high.

So then we started it again and it sounded like the Exhaust brake was on. He put his foot on the floor and it would only rev to 1,800 RPM and it had a miss. Then it threw a code and I told him " at least it can go to the dealer now". LOL We revved it 2 more times and it would rev to 3,500 RPM with no problem.

Anyways it only has 5K on it and it is headed to California soon so it will get towed to the dealer tomorrow.

I will post the results.

When I hear the rumbling exhaust sound, similar to the exhaust brake being closed at idle, my pyro gauge tells me EGT is high and the truck is in a regeneration mode. I have not experienced any of the other symptoms you described.

This truck is bone stock with no gauges.

Shouldn't there be a light or something on the dash showing that it's in regen?

I don't drive this truck very often so I just don't know.

Yep, same thing here

Same thing happened to me... Truck sounded like it was starving for air. I killed it and let it set for a bit... Cranked her up and took off with no problems. I got 10,300 on the clock and have had the CEL come on/off for about 1000 miles. I talked with the local Cummins mechanic. He said as long as a code is not thrown, no worries... .

You would think that there should be a light to notify you when your truck goes into to regen, but alas " NO ". I think that they specifically left the light off because if you actually saw how much time your truck spends in regen, dumping money out the tail-pipe, you would probably sell your truck or take all of that environment saving, fuel-wasting emissions crap off of your truck. If you want to know when your truck goes into regen, get a pyro or an Edge w attitude.

I have an Edge Insight which alerts you to active regens. If you are just driving around town at slower speeds, you don't want to know how often it regens! If you are highway driving, then you never get an alert because I think the system passively regens the DPF.

I have had similar problems with my truck. I found turning it off and starting it till it runs well works usually about 5-6 starts. you can tell when it starts if it runs like that because it just rolls into running instaed of roaring to life. haven't had the problem since i did the dpf delete.

I've never had a CEL on any of the three Dodge-Cummins I've owned so don't actually know but I've heard or read that some CELs will turn off if the problem is corrected by driving it.

As long as you don't have any greater problems such as DPF full warning light or engine going to limp mode it might be helpful to take it out on the highway and drive it hard and fast for an hour.

I assume you are burning ONLY ULSD fuel? LSD fuel will reportedly cause CELs and driveability issues.

This isn't actually my truck, it's my Father-in-laws. As far as I know it has only had ULSD, but who knows. It's been out to the middle of Oregon where fuel is a little more scarce and it was only getting 8MPG with the trailer in tow so it's hard to say what the fuel might of been.

I understand your reply. If it has been burning LSD it may require a trip to the dealer.

I've heard of the need to clean the slide nozzle in the turbo or replace the turbo, replace the dpf, and clean or replace the egr. Only a skilled Dodge tech will know.
