NO flame thrower in my closet I promise!!

Sorry if I just joined TDR guys. I am a regular at DTW. I bought my cummins because I loved my 03 Ram 2500 4x4 with the HEMI but needed more grunt. I have driven many fords and chevys and have never been comfortable on long trips. Most of my friends actually drive chevys. Most of my family drives FORDS. So I bought my truck for the pleasant styling the comfortable ride and for most of all the complete package. Not trying to start a diesel flame throwing battle just saying that if you only bought the truck for the motor and payed well over 30k then it doesnt seem like a wise investment to me. Lets not rag on dodge seeing they have the smarts somewhere to actually keep cummins and not go to a another poor diesel like the PSD or the Duramax.

When I bought the Dodge, I bought the CTD engine, as it has been an industrial application for years.

If I had to pick trucks, it would have been Ford. Having been in the construction ind. for several years, they outlast all other brands with ease from what I've seen personally.

The Dodge truck has grown on me, but if Ford had the CTD in it, I'd have an F-350 in my driveway right now.

Please help me because I'm confused. Are you a business man or an employee laborer? The only reason I ask that is because your 2 posts thus far in this thread make no business sense. You had a '97 PSD that ran forever and didn't leak one drop of oil in a truck that you feel is better quality and yet, you've owned 3 Dodge CTD trucks just because of the engine, even though you feel the Dodge won't hold up or last as long. If you're an employee laborer, then you have to drive what your company buys, but if you're a business man and own the company or are in charge of making the vehicle purchase decisions, then like I said, I'm confused.

I keep retaliating this quote with very little attention being paid to belief in what I print. Ford no longer has any slice, investment, nothing at Cummins. They screwed their own pooch. They built over 300 F-350 trucks with Cummins B 5. 9 engines for some big Texas oilman and Cummins found out! This was in strict violation of a contract agreement (Lawyers :-{} involved) that they could only use the B in F-650 or larger trucks. Ford lost all monies invested which had been used for C series development. This is why Ford is tied so tight with Navistar, even with the problems the 6. 0 has it's their only option unless CAT steps up to the plate.

If the 6. 4l PSD has launch and reliability problems like the 6. 0 did/has, then I would expect to see Ford dump International and do it themselves. Now that would be interesting!

I guess so

"Please help me because I'm confused".

"Read" the post again. Have some coffee. It will answer your questions, Jlasich. :):):):):)

Duramax Vette

I've been thinking a lot about a Duramax in a C3 Vette... .

I don't see a vee config for the HD rams, and I welcome any diesel powertrain in different platforms just because I won't drive a gas job anymore, unless it's a vette or viper.

My brother's 01 Duramax that he drives all over the country has been trouble free. His seats are far more comfortable than mine. And his Allison transmission is better than my 48RE any way you want to compare it. I have two friends with trouble free 6. 0 Fords. The big 3 all build good trucks. People buy the brand of their choice for one reason or the other and it's not my business to tell them they made the wrong decsion - they probably made the right decision for their circumstances. I also have a Tundra. Look out, Big 3, if Toyota ever decides to enter the American one-ton market!

Yep, it would being they haven't built a successful medium duty/light duty diesel engine. Like GM, they don't have the resources, design and engineering staff, or the money to spend on designing, testing, and on the production facilities necessary for building their own diesel engine.

The only medium duty diesel engine Ford used for a while in the early 80s was an inline 6-cylinder diesel built by Ford Tractor Operations in Brazil. It was discontinued because of the upcoming emission regulations and the subsequent sale of Ford Tractor Operations, which included that engine plant in Brazil, to New Holland.

on the mercedes...

Our FD got a new pumper truck and we went with the mercedes engine due to it's performance. Compared to two american diesels (Cummins, Cat) the Mercedes pulled the best. If i remmber the numbers right for their hill climb test (which was very importnant to us, since we run in the mountains) the Cat topped out at 60 mph, the Cummins at 65 and the Mercedes at a whopping 75.

Bill

From the info I've seen, Ford is already working on a 4. 4l diesel engine, for possible introduction into the F-150.

Yea there is a diesel Liberty that Jeep has too. Hmm wonder what an high output version of this would do to the ram 1500 or the Dakota.

LDobie that was an interesting link, thank you.

I am very excited that we are (finally) moving toward better efficiency and mileage than the old gasser.

Europe is way ahead of us on small diesels, we should learn about it and use it here.

I still don't understand what's wrong with having a diesel motor, why people is so against that.

I assume they see big old truck dumping a ton of black smoke in the air and they scream "pollution".

I love my Cummins, I had all 3 brands diesels (including a GM 6. 5l) in the past 3 years and I stopped at Dodge for many reasons, I'd hate to see a change in powertrain, but I'd like to see what Mercedes offers, they do build and have a large mfg of industrial vehicles in Europe, I don't think their motors are that bad at all, but a comparison would be great.

In any case I am glad they are testing and developing a diesel for LD trucks, I was considering putting a Jeep Liberty CTD powertrain into a small truck and see what it does.

I'd like to see also what the Sprinter/Mercedes could do in a full size pickup.

my company purchased a duraflat W/allison trans. If you are looking for power dont buy this truck and invest in a coolant company. You must never over heat this motor or warp a head. What were they thinking?

Having had a Furd, I can not agree with anything you are saying about long lasting. I too am a Construction Contractor and nothing last longer then Dodge, and Cummins is the only way to go.
