I want to install a pre turbo EGT gauge with sender and would like to know which would be the better size thermocouple to use. any suggestions would be appreciated.

1/8 and 1/4 are misleading. I ordered 1/4 and it was huge. Must have been 1/2 inch as I remember. I sent it back and got a 1/8 one and am a happy camper... . Jim

I can not see where it would make a difference other than each gauge manufacture has a thermocouple unique to their gauge.

I suppose the argument could be made, as time goes by, the ¼ inch would be less likely to round the hex on removal.

It is not really misleading, it is NPT thread sizes not straight thread sizes. 1/4 NPT is nearly 1/2" so it is a much larger hole that you drill into the manifold. I would use the 1/8" probe if I could get it, the smaller hole is more appealing to me and if it ever strips you can punch it out for a 1/4" probe.

Not misleading at all:

1/8" pipe was the original I. D. of the pipe

1/4" " " " " " " " "

Things change a bit, kind of like a 2X4 is 1 1/2" X 3 1/2". Ya get less for more!

Go with 1/8" NPT as there is no reason to drill and tap anything larger than needed.

And I thought he was talking abou the size of the actual thermocouple. If that was the case I would get the 1/8th because it will react faster to changes (and that means you see the actualy temp, not just what the tc mangaged to get to. )

I would definitely choose the 1/8 instead of the 1/4. When you find the half way point from the center of the manifold to the outside, there really isn't much room for error.

I almost got too close to the center. :--)
