I have up a 100. 00 reward for anyone who can fix my Dodge ram,

Here is the problem I ran into last week

I was leaving a gas station and the ABS light blinked on and then back off, I saw it do it again then it came on and stayed on.

I searched the web and forum but I have not found the problem yet. Here is what I have done so far!

1, Replace the rear ABS sensor (53. 00) Did not fix problem

2, Checked all the vaccum lines and even took out the battery box

3, Checked all the fuses inside the truck and out side the truck.

4, Readjusted the Brake light switch, Crusie did not work before I did this, work good afterwards.

5, Checked the rear brake lights, all work including the 3 rd one.

6,took out lower knee boster, found abs computer and unpluded it, Light went out but came right back on when I pludded it back in.

7. Did the Key on Key off check, got a 12, and a 55, 12 is because of the next thing in the list

8. Disconnected the batteries over night, still the light comes on and stays on when key is on or truck is running.

9, unpluged the emergency brake switch, light still on

10, check for raw wires could not find any!!

11 Took to dealer today and let them hook up the scanner to it, tech said he could not connect to the abs , had no connection. They wanted to keep it and charge me out the tail so I brought it back home. I am at the Point where my 1996 Club Cab Dually is about to get traded in on another truck. I bought it new and it has 81,000 orginal southern miles on it. I am so sick I cant even think about this. I am offering 100 cash to anyone who can fix this truck. if it is the ABS module send me one and I will send you 100 if it works. If you tell me it is this wire or that wire and I check it and it fixes it, the money is yours! I have already loss money on this problem so I am willing to offer the $100 to the guy or girl who can tell me what is wrong with it. The only thing I see I havent check is the ABS module.

If your truck is only 2 wheel ABS, then the tone ring in the differential could be the culprit. I owned a 99 Durango that the tone ring lost a couple of teeth. I openned the diff housing and saw the few teeth had chipped. The teeth, around 1/8" had worn off and were laying in the bottom of the housing. If the tone ring is missing a few teeth then the speed sensor and the computer do not know how to interpret the missing signals and as a result the ABS light is triggered. Before I dropped the diff cover I had replaced the rear speed sensor, the fuses, and I almost changed out the relay in the PCM. Abot two weeks after finding the worn teeth my wife and I traded the Duango in for a minivan. She wanted to do the soccer mom thing. :)

The tone ring went around the ring/carrier gear of the diff if memory serves me right. I hope this can help or at lease give you a few ideas.

I did check that when I put the sensor in, no teeth missing and rear looks like brand new, This truck has never been off road and has been parked for most of it's life. It has 81,000 on it and I have onwed it since brand new.

How often has the fluid been changed in the rear ?? I ran into the same exact problem and i drained and flushed the rear end with top dollar brake cleaner. Cheap brake cleaner leaves a nasty film and doesn't totally evaporate. I reinstalled royal purple 75w90 and the light has never came back on.

The other problem i can see is if the DRB (chrysler scan tool) can-not communicate with the ABS module then you either have a blown fuse or the module is bad itself. Check EVERY fuse with a test light. Both underhood and under-dash. I'll take for granted you've done this step. So i'd say bad ABS Module.

Good Luck

CONTROL MODULE, REAR WHEEL ABS, All Models 94-97 - $228. 60

Brakes - Anti-lock brakes - Control module

Found this at www.mydodgeparts.com

You've already diangosed it down to this, just put the $100 towards the new module.

Wires don't typically become bad on the inside without some sort of evidence on the outside. Look under the truck for evidence of where a rock might have hit a bundle. Also Check to make sure your ground wire for the module is good.

Dunno about your year truck, but I had a similar problem on my previous '91, where the ABS light wouldn't go out. In that case with that ABS controller, after correcting the problem with the ABS, the ABS controller has to be reset by unplugging the unit and shorting a pair of contacts together - it was fully outlined in a Chiltons manual for that truck, and sorta sounds like your problem - maybe someone has an appropriate manual that includes ABS resetting methods? Just removing power from the box was not enough on the '91...

My next door neighbors truck did the same thing, it was a wire running down too the front brakes for the ABS it rub a small portion on the plastic cover off the wire a little tape and Viola. Look real close at those wires his hole was like a pin hole and only touch when driven.

You have a connection problem with the two ABS sensor lines that go from the engine compartment to the brakes. The line is broken\cracked somewhere.

WJ,

Where are you at? Maybe you have a fellow member close by that would let you try their ABS module. I'm pretty sure it's going to have to be from a '96, but maybe another year model will work. If I didn't drive my '95 everyday I'd send you mine.

Good luck,

Scott

I am not familiar with the 96 my 99 did the same thing it was the speed sensor in the rear end . Don't know if you have one or not...

UMmmmm - well, offhand, *I* would say he does...

AH, the reading impaired! :D :D

Just pull the bulb on the ABS light. Be done with it. The ABS on these trucks are primative and don't really do much good. If you want to make a few new brake lines and eliminate the abs all together, i would do that instead of spending money on a new module.

I did essentially the same thing on ny '91 - it too only had rear wheel ABS, and it absolutely STUNK!

SO, in my case, I replaced the rear ABS sensor with a 1800 ohm resistor to "fool" the controller into thinking the sensor was still there and operating properly - the light went out, and the NON-ABS brakes woked FAR better than they had before...

i had the same problem on my 98. 5. found the wires chafed thru where the wires to the abs sensor crosses from outside the framejust forward of the left rear tire. hard to see because dc had tye wrapped it to the frame, had to cut the tyes and move the wires to see it. hope this helps.

JW, my 97 had pretty much the same problem. Replaced the sensor AND the lead that it attaches to. Pretty much what Four BarR has said above. I believe D/C had a TSB out on this a whaile back, doubt its still valid. Wires were not worn or anything, something wrong inside the harness. Mine went bad around 60K if I remember right. Try that and see.

Ok the speed sensor is fine because on the 96 manuel truck I believe it gets it speedometer reading from the rear. I need a pinout of the ALDL port and a troubleing shooting guide from Alldata if anyone has it. My email is -- email address removed --

thanks

JW do you pull a trailer had the same problem with 97 3500 while still under warranty dealer told me to disconnect the ground from the trailer wiring harness and just ground through the ball may sound weird and a long shot but the light has not stayed on since.

One thing I did notice, the ABS light never goes off or blinks, Once you turn on the truck the light comes on and never blinks or anything. The ABS light and Brake glows all the time. I thought that the ABS would blink going thru a self check? This one does not! Any Ideas?
