I knew that would get your attention, it sure got mine. My BS meter was pegged. This is what I heard.

THE HISTORY OF THE 7. 3 PSD

Do you know where the 7. 3 PSD came from? It was used in a boat and made 1000 hp all day long. Same bottom end that is in the F#*d trucks, just different turbo and injectors.

I heard this from my Nephew who is taking Ford trianing, he heard it strait form his teacher or something like that. All I said is it smelled a bit fishy. What do I do? I hear claims like this all the time, I spend my time proving him wrong. Then I get hurt feelings and a cheesed off Nephew. You wanna hear more? The famous Ford owns Cummins. And Ford designed the Cummins ISB. I like Fords, shoot I used to drive them, real good trucks, but this kinda stuff really turns me off. Bad thing is, it makes me hate ford.

So, where can I find the real history of the 7. 3 PSD?

See if you can find info on the old International Harvester company. The 6. 9 was an IH motor in the beginning, if I recal correctly.

So the 7. 3 came form the 6. 9, that's what I was thinking. So the 7. 3 block wasn't designed to be turbo charged, explains the small connecting rods.

Ford doesn't own Cummins, they own some company called Cummings. Just ask the Ford guys:p

Another reason why I hate being a Ford guy...........

No wonder the dealerships are so clueless if this is the kind of crap that they feed the new guys.

The marine 7. 3 puts out 330 hp. But I'm not sure at what rpm. I'm thinking around 3100.

The PSD is a completely different animal then the 7. 3 IDI motor. Everything is different.

I guess it depends at what RPM that Hp number was derived at... ... .

Here is formula. If true pretty impressive.

I'll need a vin # LOL :D #ad

(1000 x 5252)/ 2800rpm = 1875ft lbs torque

Ask that "teacher" to send one of those big burly Drofs to May Madness. Free dyno runs to try to beat poor old 12-valve Sickly and the Diesel Dynamics 24 valve Cummins (not the ones "designed" by Ford, either) Rams :D

Last time they tried that, loaded with chips, boxes, propane, and nitrous, was a year ago at the Dyno Days here in 'Vegas. Lawrence piloted Sickly on the silver State dyno at 609. 3 and 609. 5 hp, more than 100 over any Ford, if I recall. We did it on just ol' #2 diesel against all their drugs.

Send 'em on. We're waiting for those bad Fords. [no offense intended, just healthy competition!] Oo.

Maybe he was turning 10000 rpm! :D . At our dyno day in December I heard a PSD touch 5100 rpm! No joke-the guy had a chip burned that eliminated the rev limiter and got a little overzealous laying 'er to the rug. What a horrible sound... ..... surprised it wasn't followed by the sound of rods dancing their way through the block... Spooked the dyno operator even!

phord owns cummings

yep, got it straight from the horse's mouth. pford salesman last saturday told me,"Ford owns Cummings you know"... ... ... can't get much more official than that.

Same

The kid (a disgrace to the family), Pford salesman. Told me the same thing, "Ford owns Cummins". I had to show him different. I think they will tell their salesmen anything to sell a car. How many people fall for that line though?

The history of the PS is that it ran a couple of hours a day in a Corn-binder and blew up. A freind of mine bought a International V-8 rig back in the 70s. The salesman said it was the future of trucking, Blah, blah, blah. It went through two clyinders, a turbo, four pistons, and one head, BEFORE it hit 30,000 miles... ... ...

The new PS 6. 0 is going to be fun to watch. The F%$d boys are going to have to hold their old 7. 3s together for awhile (which can be hard to do) , cause the new ones are going to be a POS for awhile. It took them ten years to get the PS half way right.

I guess it goes both ways

I had a Dodge salesman tell me that to get 500 hp out of a 5. 9 Cummins ISB all you had to do was disconnect the govener. But, I didn't even come close to believing him. I didn't even have time to disagree, he was to busy ragging PSD and the Duramax. Made me feel like buying a PSD, may have even gone to the Ford house after, I don't remember. I love checking out the competition, and taking a test drive. I've driven a few PSDs, not my style. Tried driving a Duramax, sales person spews so much BS about Cummins and PSD, that I end up wanting to race it instead of driving it. But I have driven a buddy of mines Duramax, not my style either. By the looks of the new Rams, they're not my style either. Don't know what I'm gonna do when this one wears out (69,000 miles), I think I'll buy me a 98 12 valve and rework it all, and put it in storage until 2010. I love my truck, but I wish it was a 12 valve.

Great!

Joe challenges a fictional character, climbs off the porch, and knows he will win because,

" How the devil will DD get that BOAT strapped on the dyno!!??!!" :D ;)

ANYWAY

I don't think the PSD is a bad engine, when you look at the problems that both the PSD and the ISB seem to encounter, they seem to be quite similar, but not major. If the PSD was a POS, the bottom end would blow out at 100,000 miles and like wise for the ISB. The electronic problems that both of these engines seem to have can be major, like oops we have a tow truck because of the cam posistion sensor, or oops the VP-44 quit, and there is only about 2 places in the world that can service them.

My point:

If there was a PSD making 1,000 HP, everyone would have it smeared in their face no matter what application it was in... same for the ISB :D  And all engines in all trucks seem to have their own tall tales following them around :-{} Enjoy your engine. :D. ering!
