but rarely practical to carry.

Don't know I carry one pretty much all day when out in the backyard. Guess its what your use to.

I spent a lot time in Alaska, the inland Grizzleys of the lower 48 are small :)

Yeah, it's just plain easier to carry a pistol with 15 rounds than a long gun. It doesn't phase or worry me in the least, faster to reload, cycles the rounds automagically and easier to aim at short distances. I carried both in Alaska when able.

It is what your used to for sure. It's just like trucks. People do what I do with a 1/2 ton and it boggles my mind, same thing with owning a 2wd.. I just think why bother!!??

The minimum is a 44 mag with 300g or heavier bullets. hen I was in Co. visiting my brother I packer a 45-70 when walking the dog. The Marlin is shorter than my deer rifle in 375H and H with a 26 in tube in the brush. Something to consider is hunting a bear and defending yourself from one The latter requires more bullet.

Met this man thru another friend that was also a quick draw artist im trying to find a video of him downing a Kodiak bear with 2, 45 1911's the bear was mounted in a BBQ in Downey Calif, I asked him if that was smart? he said not a problem when your back up was a 458 win mag. Remarkable things can and have been done with guns, IT DOESNT ALWAYS MEEN THEY ARE SMART!!! If I cant find the video I will call him and have him send a copy to me, just watching it makes me want to ruin a pair of underwear. This is why I always stop and look at bear Poo, It COULD BE SOMEONE THAT I KNEW!! THAT WAS UNDER-GUNED AT THE TIME. Thell now is a supplier of guns to the movie industry fake guns for the stars.

I Milk the cow and tend to the animals in the barn packing my Marlin with the 540 hammerheads I WONT GO WITHOUT IT. I don't hunt bear but agree with, the latter requires more bullet, a POff Grizz is some kind of mean when the adrenaline is flowing, I have witnessed two good sized Grizz duking it out over a gut pile left from an Elk kill, a 10mm aint going to cut it when they are P***ed and your shaking like a dog trying to pass a peach seed, JMO

the 460 is one very good round. Yes it will do what you want it for. It is not bad on recoil as the 500 so that is why I like the 460. Yes the 10 mm will do a good job also. Look it up to see where it stands with the 44 Mag. GOOD LUCK

My particular use would be most likely for black bear. After two years in TN i'm just not happy. I miss mountains, cold air, and most importantly big deer. I'm moving to Utah this summer after school and plan on getting back in the mountains. I carried a . 44 for black bear when hunting CA mountains. Out of all the days in the woods (10 years) I encountered a bear once, we looked each other in the eye for about a second and he split.

But it's always so much fun to buy another gun, isn't it???

You get so many recommedations on a forum such as this.

Bottom line is it's better to have something rather than nothing.

Reports have been available for almost ANY caliber as long as the shooter can do their part.

Bigger is better.

You've got a good gun, get a good bullet (Buffalobore or Garretts) and I think you'll be as good as one can be without a bigger gun (Rifle).

Good luck and good hunting.

I deer hunt with with my 1895 in high country and 336 in low country, my real question is on archery hunts. I'm happy carrying the . 44 but I was curious if it's more effective to have more lead to sling? Mt. Lion can be just as much an issue, although they usually jump right on your head and you don't get a chance to do much.

As far as Grizz go, i'm quite confident that if charged by one i'd soil myself and get about 2 seconds into a Hail Mary before I was torn to shreds.

I think I may just hang onto the Tracker since I already have it, but I thought a heavy semi-auto might fare better. I'd hate to have to buy another gun:-laf

Most people can't shoot a big handgun accurately, especially at a charging bear. Your better off to use bear spray. I've had a couple run ins with brown bears over the years, and have hunted Kodiak for bears, and a pistol sure felt small in my hand, luckily I didn't have to use it. I carry a 12 gauge nowadays while archery hunting and plan on carrying bear spray in the future. There's been some studies on bear spray and its effectiveness, a lot of Park service personnel up here have gone to it.

I'm totally with BIG on this one! .45/70 Carbine first line defense, .45/454 or .44 Magnum double action resolver as back-up. Loaded with heavy for caliber, hard cast bullets. Otherwise??? Bigger Resolvers require very strong wrists and hands with a stout grip! Can You handle a .500 S&W? I can't!
The alternative? Ya can carry pepper spray and wear bells!:-laf;)

Had some Backpackers cut across our property one time, We really didn't care but when they came running up to Penny & I working in the Garden in an almost panic attack yelling that they had seen a Grizzly Bear just the other side of some trees Watch Out!! Penny told them ya he comes for some of our veggies most everyday, a well thrown rock usually sends him on his way. The backpacker Girl announced that THEY HAVE PEPPER SPRAY!! Penny said rocks seem to be a little better you don't have to get so close like you do with pepper spray. The Guy backpacker announced that he feels MUCH safer with Pepper Spray how about you Sir? I pulled my work gloves off and pulled the Marlin from the tractor mounted scabbard, When You Absolutely, Positively have to persuade them to Move Along. Nothing!! & I Mean Nothing!! says it like 540 Grs of Whoop XXX

I didn't think that people could run with Backpacks on!! Penny said that we need to work on your communication skills some BIG :-laf Why they got the point, Look at them run!!

I use to carry a 44Mag with 340 gr hard cast slugs, I have since bought a Super Redhawk 454 Casull pushing a 400 gr hard cast. G Man is spot on, unless you have a pretty good grip I'd suggest you stay with something a little less Volatile!! Or Risk getting a Crease in the brim of your hat ;)

Guess my S&W, 357 would only tickle a grizzly. I've been told that if you have an encounter with a grizzly and all you have is a 357 to aim for his nose, because that would get the bear very confused. Then if you're close enough to shoot him on each shoulder so he can't run after you as BIG said on post #10.

When I was young I used to dream about owning a 454 Casull. Now that I'm older I have nightmares about shooting one.

I did some shooting today. The Casull is a handful for sure, but nothing that cant be handled. Its recoil is more of a backards roll into the web of the thumb not so much of snapping up and back. Seems like the lighter bullets tend to recoil up and the big boys roll back more. Penny shoots it so how bad can it be? she's not a big Girl by anyone's standards. I think that the same round in a Single action with the grip being different would be an entirely different story, the Super Red hawk fits the round perfectly.

Brother BIG,
Was thinking the same thing. The grip shape makes it or breaks it.
The Freedom Arms resolver has a modified Bisley shape and is fat. Recoil is manageable.
It would be better If I had larger "paws". ;)
I was "Fondling and Lusting" after a Super Redhawk in .454. NICE!Oo.

The counter feller complained cause I messed up his wipe cloth:D
Would like a 5" bull barrel. Their 5" model is has a slabbed sided barrel. To much machining on that tube.IMHO.
Well, we are a long way from that purchase.
A Double action would sure be the ticket when ya can't cock the hammer on a S.A..

You boys hit the nail on the head. My comparison comes from a Virginian Dragoon in 44 mag I aquired as a young man. The grip ends about 2/3 of the way down my hand. It's so unpleasant I can't even remember the last time I fired it. I'm thinking of trading for something with a Bisley style grip. Maybe in 45 Colt? What's your opinion?

So buy a 454 Casull and shoot 45 Colts!! you would always have the option for BOTH!!

most people will start shooting and start missing out of excitement. the more rounds you have and faster you can get them off, the better your odds of surviving. The 10mm may be on the lite side but a G20 with 15 rounds of Double Tap 200gr solid's will increase your odds of making a central nervous system hit. That of course is if you can't carry a Big Gun.

Big said "So buy a 454 Casull and shoot 45 Colts!! you would always have the option for BOTH!!"

Or buy a 460 Smith and shoot 454 Casull's for light loads :).

I'm not a big guy at 6' 175, but I've shot and hunted with short guns for the past 30 years so may be a tad recoil de-sensitized....but my 460 isn't bad to shoot (with factories anyway). It can be one handed....now when I have an audience I usually do put on a bit of a show what with letting it come up and stepping back. Now if it were loaded with max load 400 grain solids it'd be a beast, but that'd apply to the business end as well.
