So my friends 01 CTD has 12 psi of fuel (autometer mech gauge) when you turn the key on, then when you try to start it just cranks for about 6-7 seconds and then finally starts. We removed the fuel filter to see it that helped. With no fule filter it worked fine. After we installed a new fuel filter it continues to crank over for a long period of time. We thought maybe the VP pump was dead so we checked for codes but no P-codes came up. Has anyone come acrossed this before or has an idea of whats wrong?

Thanks

The truck has 185K on it, he has had it since 155K. Dont know if the pump was replaced with the first owner. What does the bypass valve do? he was eventually thinking about changing out the inlet banjo with a BD one and doing a bigger fuel line up to the pump... (one of these days). I'm guessing if the return banjo is clogged or something it will creat too much pressure?

Thanks

Actaully the opposite. If it fails, it won't keep fuel in the pump and it runs out when the truck isn't running. Like it loses prime. Seen it a few times.

Well we replaced the $50 banjo bolt :eek: and it worked for about a day before it went right back to crank-no start. He degreased the engine to check for leaks of some sort, checked for diesel in the oil, nothing. Still no codes and the problems has gotten worse. :{

He is thinking about ripping the pump off and getting it bench tested up north. We'll see whats up.
