Fuel Filter Change

GBall, I too went thru the same apprehension that you are. I have a 95 and assume the filter location is the same. I ended up taking it to Cummins N. W. in Portland and had them do it. Took an hour for the guys that know what to do. I ended up having a Prime Lok put on. A wee bit costly but worth it. I was charged approx. $100. 00 for the first change. The Prime Lok will pay for it's self quickly. I saw somewhere on this site that one of the parts dealers has a Prime Lok for the same $100. 00 I spent to have the first filter only installed. I don't recall the place, but a search for Prime Lok would get you going in the right direction. I also suggest getting the manual from Chryler. A must for those of us wanting to do things to our rigs without paying for someone else to do it. Good luck.

Check this out. I also have a 98 12v. If your arms are big they will look like they got shredded by a cat when done! I do mine all the time. The hardest part is sneaking the canister out the top of the fray of hoses wires and tubes. Good Luck!

P. S. I go through the top with mine, I do not remove from the underside. It can be done! Here's a hint, it can be removed up front, by the battery and intercooler tube.

I would tell you how but '98s are different from earlier models. What I can tell you is that it is no big deal, most important thing is to fill the filter with fuel before starting the truck. This can be done by pouring it in before installing or by opening the bleed screw and pumping the manual primer on your lift pump until your thumb is raw, a broom handle works well. Don't buy your filter from the dealer, you will get ripped off. I use Wix fuel filters, they are the same as Fleetguard, just painted over, found that out after leaving the OEM filter in a solvent tank overnight. Get a Dodge manual.

Thanks folk you guys are great I will give it a go. I have had this sucker for the last year and a half and done nothing. it is time to go for I will let ya know. Thanks

When you get tired of the power your stock truck has and you get a TST#8 put in the pump(Guages first) you will wonder why you waited so long for real power(It's night and day difference) but it's up to you and your pocket book. I think hand pumping the filter full is the easiest but it takes time to fill it.

GBall, dont be afraid of it, just give yourself some time to do it.

After you've done it a few times, you'll be able to do it in your sleep.

Jenos has the best filter prices.

Eric

PS

I can do mine in about 20 minutes.

Finally gave in

Every time I change the  thing I swear that the next time I'm gonna put on a Prime loc. Well, after the last time, I actually have one sitting in my living room floor. Next filter change, it's going on. I have relativly small hands and the danged filter is still a booger to get out of there.

:p I can change mine in 10 minutes in the stock configuration! All you have to do is take the 2 master cylinder nuts off with your air rachet and move the master cylinder towards the fender. This will leave you plenty of room to reach in with a filter wrench and remove&replace ,than put master cylinder back in position and tighten nuts. :D :D :D This works on my truck with all wheel ABS.

Kevin, just to clarify for newcomers, the master cylinder/brake booster removal trick only works on '94-'96. I also use it on my '95s, makes it a breeze.

I'm very glad I caught this thread before I headed out and did the fuel filter... .

I feel bad about not changing it... . but everytime I looked at it I cringed and swore a lot.

I'm going for it... even if it kills me!

Change mine every 12k. Iis skinny so it aint no thing. Been thinking of removing the inner plastic fender liner rivets and replacing them with ss quarter 20 bolts, nuts, and washers. With the liner removed, You can reach right in there and do it.

94 is a completely different animal then the 98.

I have ABS which I think probibally makes it more of a PITA.
