Since I am completely ignorant of 12 valve fuel issues, I have a question for those owners.

I have changed to a 12 valve lift pump, I am considering modding my fuel lines in order to increase size and to remove the restrictions from the stock module elbow on forward.

So, here's the question part. What do 12 valve trucks use for a prefilter to the lift pump? Is it the same arrangement as the 24 valves? I don't know why there would be a difference or if there even is one. Just looking for some ideas.

I have seen the FASS stand pipe setup and basically it pulls fuel into the fass filters and the fuel filtering happens right there. I am just looking for a prefilter. Something to grab any heavy junk in the path of the pump. I am thinking 60- 100 micron. Of course, cleanable stainless mesh.

Any ideas?

on my 96 theres the sock filter in the tank to catch the plants and birds and rocks and things, then the fuel heater has another screen in it's housing and a couple inch hose from the fuel heater then goes into the lift pump, and on to the main filter

Thanks for the reply.

Have you seen the filter in the 24valve module? Any idea if it is the same material?

Also, any idea of the level of filtering of the screen at the lift pump?

Sorry for the questions. But, if I don't ask, I will never know!

Thanks again!!

Dave

The 12 valve lift pump and fuel heater/pre-filter assemble mount to the engine block with same screws. There are two identical gaskets. One goes between the gasket and the fuel heater assembly and the other goes between the fuel heater assembly at the lift pump. These assemblys are connected with a short curved house. It looks like this from above:

You can leave out the fuel heater part of the assembly so all that remains is the pre-filter. The fuel filter is blocking a direct view of the lift pump. It is on the right end of the curved hose. The screen in the pre-filter is easy to remove and clean from below with a 14mm socket.

Thanks for the pics.

I have a spacer behind the pump. No heater obviously. Any idea of the size (microns) the mesh is in the prefilter?

I am researching filter options now. I just need a prefilter that can get the big stuff and have very low draw resistance.

I don't know what the size is. Cummins obviously thinks that it is good enough to protect the lift pump. They seem to be lasting a long time with it. If you use it then you don't have to come up with some way to mount some other kind of pre-filter.

Were did you get that spin on fuel filter! I like it and hate my canister version... ... yes I still use the stock filter an stock fuel system for daily driving.

Joe,

I see you still have the OEM plastic throttle rod ends too. I was going to do the TSB upgrade to the new brass ball ends w/ the new throttle rod. It didn't work. Throttle rod was too long (if I remember right). I played with it for a couple of hours. Parts guy double checked to make sure I got the right parts. They were. I returned everything and still am running plastic rod ends. I pop them off once in a great while and fill them w/ grease. They are holding up fine.

Those are not original. They are part of the throttle cable recall. I have had no trouble. I just give them a shot of LPS #3 once in a while.
