my brother is thinking of getting a newer truck and he asked me to ask the guys and gals what they think?he would like to know the pros and cons of both trucks? now no prejudice here,be honest. its not every day u go out and spend 30 grand or more! tnx in advance denny!:D
 
Hind sight...

Christen - If I had it all to do over again, I'd want the 12 valve real bad. But I'd want the quad cab doors too. I think the early production '98's were 12V'ers with quad cab doors. I should've shopped around and found a good one of those, instead of buying a new 2000 24V. Not a thing has gone wrong with my 24V so I'm not complaining about that, but I would've saved quite a bit of money on a 12V truck. Overall I think I would prefer to have a 12V'er. Except for the 5th gear nut thing, but I've heard that's an easy fix.

I agree w/ JyRo on the 12 valve issue. I really like my 24 Valve and all of its features but if I purchase a truck to "play" with it will be a 97 or 98 12 Valve 5-speed . From what I have read and learned the bottom torque is unmatched compared to a 24 Valve and it has an "industrial" designed injector pump.

There all good, so go for the best price and condition and options. Thomas
 
I'd have to agree with the late 12V strictly because of the P7100 injection pump... keep the filters changed, and get the newest shutoff solenoid and you just won't have any fuel system problems... whereas the VP44 is an underdesigned POS that started out with the same built-in flaws of the earlier VE series pumps and added it's own wrinkles, plus the electric lift pump. I'd trade my 98. 5 for a 98 in a minute all other things being equal.
 
They're hard to find but yeah, early 98 12v quad is the cat's meow. Not that many made so they should just increase in value as time goes by, besides we all know.....

Guess I'll have to be the lone defender of the 24 valver - I loved my old '91 12 valve job - unbeatable for reliability - and lack of electronic controls seemed a plus - but it required about $3000 to deliver the power and flexibility I got for $600 with my '02 - yeah, apples/oranges perhaps - but the only thing *I* feel is a weakness with the 24 valver, is the fuel delivery setup - and that SEEMS to be easily fixed, externally, with a simple $100 pusher pump to assist what's already there - a simple couple hours work most any semi-retard can do - I use myself as an example...



With the 24 valve, you get the HO engine, with greater power off the dealer floor, a number of individual component enhncements such as better valve seats, coated pistons and such, and another100,000 miles suggested engine life compared to the 12 valve's 300,000 miles (last I heard) - and the 6-speed has no major problems or concerns that might require removal and O'haul as is the case with the 5-speed nut problem relatively common on the 12 valve setups...



I certainly would NOT trade my 24 valver HO for a 12 valve setup...



They're both good -- both have their devoted followers - and their own specific weaknesses and flaws - it's sorta like asking which beer is best... ;) :D

98 12V QC is an awesome combo...

A good friend of mine just bought one of the rarest 12V's around. It is a 1998, which means it has the 24V interior, but it is a 12V SLT Plus Quad Cab Sport.



It is one awesome truck all the bells and whistles, in fantastic condition and so so rare...



I told him if he ever sells it (I doubt if he will) I get first dibs...



What a truck...



I have P-pump envy... BIG TIME!!



Don't misunderstand me I love my Y2K 24V but I sure would like to have his truck too... :D

It's too bad that DC doesn't offer both engines. They don't and all of the 12 valve trucks are steadily getting old. That means that what might be saved in fuel pumps will be spent ten times over in front ends, drivelines, interior hardware, and cooling system problems. Their frames might be stretched and twisted from too heavy towing for too many years. Metal gets tired.
 
I owned a 95 std-Cab 12v and loved the motor and liked the truck.



I now own a 2K Quad-cab, love the truck and “some what like” the motor.



A 98 Quad-cab with a 12v would definitely be my dream truck.

it depends.....

dad drools over my truck cause mine sounds better in the exhaust(his could if he would only put on the big tip-- his is 3", the old stuff rotted away) . however i spent $350 on a USED plug-n-power, but his "tune up" cost me a fuel filter and a couple hours of my time.



But when both were stock, mine had kick ass power over his. Even "vern", our friend with a 98 12v kicked himself for not waiting the three months for a 24v.



Just a note: mine has had MAJOR elec. problems, coverd by warranty but losing a inj. pump is still bad, his 94 has had NO problems outside the fuel solenoid issue.



in summary, reliabillity X easy to bomb = 12v

somewhat reliable X more base power X more bomb power + more expensive bomb= 24v



dads is a 94 and mine is 98. 5, both 5-speed. I wouldnt trade mine, but that $350 check hurt aufly bad after the $20 bill on his tune up... .....
 
I drive a 95 slightly modified. My wife drives the 98 quad cab sb. I am planning to add a TST plate to it next month. My work truck is a Y2K CTD quad cab lb. The only thing I like better about the Y2K over the 98 is the quicker shift into lock up. The 98 is the best of both worlds. I looked for her truck for over 6 months and had to travel four hundred miles to pick it up, but it has been worth all the trouble. Cost wise I paid as much for it as most 2000 models were bringing with similar mileage. People who know trucks know the 98 is worth more. One dealer told me he found one for a friend and paid $4,000 more than a comparable 97 would have brought.
 
I have a 97 w/ 44K and the 12V and a 99 w/ 103K mi. and the 24V. The 97 will run away from the 99. It pulls a lot better and cruises great. Just a smoother engine in my opinion. (The 12V)

Both units are stock.
 
I believe somewhere the number $30k was mentioned. If I were shopping the used market, and had plenty of time to look, I'd go for the '98 12 valve. But 24 valves do have some advantages - like 100k between valve adjustments, dowel pin problem fixed, thicker shaft on the 6 speed, and block cracking fixed with thicker casting. And if I had $30k to spend, I'd be buying a BRAND NEW 24 valve from some dealer who wants to clear the lot for '03's, not somebody else's 3 or 4 year old, 50k to 100k USED truck. These Cummins hold their value, which is not necessarily good for you if you're on the buying end of a used truck deal. Some folks are finding deals like $7500 off list, which gets you a new truck with full warranty, and you can insure it is driven, broken in, and maintained "right" (whatever that is for you) from day one...
 
Having owned both now, (heck I STILL DO :rolleyes: ) I would have to say that while I love the newness and new intereior and features of the 24V, You just GOTTA love the 12v. Course, I haven't been able to afford any major changes to the 24v yet, but that 12v just purrrrrrrs along. At this point, my vote would go toward a nicely Bombed 12v.



I agree that the 12v's are geting old and tired, but look around. I only have 59K on my 96 that's for sale. I have also recently come accross a few that had very low mileage and were in excellent condition. They're out there, you just gotta look around.
