12v six speed G56 conversion

I've searched and haven't found verified way to make the speedo work with a 6 speed swap in a 12v truck.

AFAIK the '97 and earlier trucks have the vehicle speed sensor in the tailhousing of the transmission for the speedo and a wheel speed sensor in the diff for the ABS. The 98 and newer trucks have the VSS/WSS in the rear diff. Thus the NV5600 and G56 have no provision for the VSS.

Does the transfer case from a 12v 4x4 have the VSS in it? Does the transfer case from a nv4500 bolt onto a nv5600/g56? Is there an electronic way to get the ABS signal to run the speedo?

Thanks, Eric

Thanks, I'm looking to upgrade to the 6-speed. I'll tell my parts guy to look for a 4x4 transmission and transfer case so my speedo will still work.

What I meant was the transfer case you have now has the speed sensor installed in it. Now that I have looked at your sig again it looks like you don't have a 4X4. I doubt that your would want to carry around a transfer case on a RWD.

Actually the transfer case sounds good to me. I'll be able to use the low range for backing my trailer into its parking space without slipping the clucth so much!

On my 2WD crew conversation I will be running a divorced NP205 ( with a G56 6 speed ) for that very reason. Of course I have lots of wheelbase to do it. Shadrach

The transfer case has the speedo sensor in it as said. I just swapped a G56 in my 95 and my speedo works fine. Dakota digital makes a box for under $100 that can be used to convert the wheel sensor pulse to drive the speedo for the 2wd or newer transfer case setups. I saw it mentioned on this board while searching for swap info.

OK, I've got a G56 on the way to me. Dakota digital will handle the speedo. I'll fab the crossmember, get the driveshaft shortened locally...

Burnin oil: Are you using a custom South Bend clutch or does the one they make for the NV4500 to NV5600 conversion work with the G56?

I believe that it is just an off the shelf clutch that he sells for the 3rd gen trucks. Or in other words the one piece flywheel that they sell to replace the dual mass with. The fywheel is also different than the upgrade one that they use for the NV4500 as I had to send one back (I originally ordered a CON FE for a NV4500). I have about 1000 miles on it with no problems what so ever other than having to make sure to get the pedal all the way to the floor it shifts butifully. As it where in the pedal does raise a little. Same thing happened on my 04. 5

It's in :D Just test drove it, everything looks/feels/sounds good.

Confirmed details for anyone thinking about doing this swap.

SBC MU G56 clutch with solid mass flywheel bolts right in, for my '97 Peter said I didn't need the HD hydraulic kit. He's correct (duh, should have known that he would be!) my stock mater/slave work fine with the G56.

No body lift required. I notched my crossmember 1 1/2".

My bathroom scale put the G56 @ 250lbs. (NV4500 @ 200lbs)

The driveshaft switches from a splined slip joint (nv4500) to a four bolt flange (g56) to connect to the transmission. The driveline shop I went to had the flange on the shelf so it must be common. (the invoice said "ford" flange, I hope it can handle the Cummins power!) The flange bolts are metric 12x1. 75 30mm long.

For a '97 club cab long bed the driveshaft lenghs:

46 5/16" face of transmission flange to center of center bearing.

47 7/8" face of pinion yoke to center of center bearing.

94 3/16" over all length.

The required flange/yoke is Spicer part # 3-2-1789.

2006 G56 shifter works well. Doesn't hit dash or seat, it ends up just a little bit closer to the seat, further from the dash.

Glad that it all worked out for you. Mine is still running great with MPG being up in town. My shifter cleared everything but the Genos cup smoothie. How does your truck do on the 2-3 shift? I am getting some spring wrap under most throttle conditions.

So far I've only driven around town (empty), everything has been smooth, no clutch chatter, axle wrap or any other unpleasentness.

Next weekend I'll pull the trailer out to AAA speedway for a real test.

I'm lovin' it! Pulls great.

Upshifting @2500rpm's the revs drop back to @1750rpm's. No more screaming the top end or lugging the bottom:)

I finally got around to ordering the Dakota Digital SGI-5 speed signal interface. It works great, simple 4 wire install. Power, ground, signal in (from ABS) and signal out (to speedo)

For anybody doing this conversion, you want to use output #3 (8000ppm ac output)with switch #3 and #4 up.

For my '97 got the ABS signal from the OBD data link connector (red wire with violet tracer) The factory speedo signal wire (white with orange tracer) was found in the big white wire connector that is under the dash in between the clutch and parking brake pedals.

Great work. . . that's the precise reason I'd love to ditch my NV4500 for a 6-speed. I seriously dislike the huge 3-4 gear gap, I'm often rowing between 3rd & 4th because traffic speed is right there in that dead spot

Burnin oil, do you still have the NV241 transfer case or did you use one made for the G56? How did it work out?
