Hi Guys!

Most of you probably saw my post about the Power Wagon injector install. Next up is the 14cm housing. I went to the search engine and found a lot of good stuff, but I have a couple of questions before I proceed:

1. Does the whole turbo have to come off? Or can I just remove the exhaust housing piece? If the whole turbo comes off, how much trouble are the oil lines?

2. From my research, and THEN taking a closer look at my parts, I see that the downpipe (& entire exhaust system?) gets moved back because the 14cm housing's outlet neck is longer than the stock housing's neck. Is that OK? If the down pipe heat shield touches the heater core shield is that OK? Or do I have to cut and butt-weld the down pipe to 'shorten' it up? Does anyone make a 'short' down pipe?

The rest of the swap appears fairly straightforward, but I'll take any free advice I can get!!!!

Thanks!

Mike

Mike,

Depending on how "stuck" the old exhaust housing is, you may want to remove the entire assembly. I did mine that way. Gives you more room to swing the hammer!! :D

I just unhooked the oil line on the lower side and had it attached to the turbo during work. If you do remove everything, don't overtighten anything until you get it back in place and make sure that it all aligns correctly.

I forgot to look at your signature, but this is an ideal time to install the pyro sensor. Also, I had some leakage from my manifold flange after I hooked back. I got 2 gaskets and slathered on the high temp thread compound. No leak now.

I didn't have a problem with the downpipe, as the 16 was the same length as the 21. I do think there is a small elbow that comes with the newer trucks that might work for you. But I'm not sure.

Putting the 16 on mine was no trouble. Not sure about the 14 and the longer outlet though. I would say the heat shield hitting the heater box would not be good. I took the whole turbo off when I did mine, but I don't think you would have to if you were careful.

Let me know how it goes as I am looking at putting a 14 on mine.

I have put in a few 12cm housings, and as long as you keep your cuts straight and welds good, you should be ok. I always used the roudn chain type exhaust pipe cutter ($5 from the parts store). Get the cutting wheels as close to the flange as I can- about 1/2-3/4 inch. Next, cut right at the point the pipe flares out to 3". Weld the short part with the flange for the turbo clamp to the rest of it and you're good to go. I recommend taking the DP out of the truck to make welding and cutting easier.

I wouldnt want the heat shield hitting the heater core box, either. The shield may keep some of he heat off there, but not all of it.

Hey I don't even have one, maybe thats why I have a nice burn hole through the covering and almost into the heater core box. When I upgrade turbos and new downpipe I plan on rigging up a heat shield.

Yup, I got the nice little burn hole in the box, too. When you get a new DP, why not just get a DP with the heat shield?

Rather than a heat shield go to any parts store and get some header wrap. It will keep the flames to a minimum under the hood and help your exhaust flow also.

Burn marks on the firewall :rolleyes: and you will be :{ :{
