Not really trying to be a smartass here, but 70mph gets me run over on the interstate. I live in Texas, and the speed limit is 60 close to work, and quickly ranges up to 75. Me doing 80 in a 75 gets a lot of folks huffy as it is.

It seems the consensus is that there's nothing mechanically wrong with my truck. At that speed, it just isn't efficient. Maybe a tune might help a little bit, maybe some highway tires. But at 80mph, 16mpg is the reality.

Thankfully I don't drive this thing every day, 71 miles each way.
That's what my Volkswagen TDI is for, 38 mpg or more.

I had to laugh when I read your reply. Recently I flew into Dallas and had to drive to Waco, I had to drive 80 to keep pace with the traffic, including the semi's! Being in a little rental, I figured it was a matter of survival to keep up!

I drive 10-12k monthly. Never over 70-mph. Often enough at 62-mph when traffic volume is high.

Claiming any or many are speeding significantly above the posted limit is a lie.

The game is twofold:

1). Lane Center (no exceptions)

2). Maximum Vehicle Spacing (no exceptions)

Work these two and the rest follows. Safety & Economy.

— How fast you want to run isn’t on a sign, that’s the permissible range. It’s not ONE number.

Traffic Volume dictates road speed. Cruise Control Set Point is below flow of idiots. If you can’t judge correct distances according to road capacity, go back where you came from.

None of this involves passing to any great extent. That’s the poor driver.

I can travel on cruise at 68-69/mph and rarely hit the left lane in hundreds of miles. 2-3-4 times.
Just did that in today’s 540-miles. So, why can’t you?

(The fools run up to the next pack and make it worse. Illegally blocking left lane. Tailgating. Etc. Ranchers hauling horses and RV’ers are now the worst drivers on the highway NEVER considering their lack of stability OR how it WILL screw up the road for everyone else).

One just backs off a little. Gets them gone. Same for anyone passing slowly.
Practice 1& 2 till it’s all you see.

It ain’t rocket science.

Economy of operation pays.

If you don’t see 100k regularly for brakes & tires (need tire rotations) it’s time for remedial training.

My pickup sees 50/50 town & country. In a quarter-million it was with two sets of tires, the brakes & clutch are original.

No reason you can’t do the same, or close.

Come run I-85 / I-40 or I-95 in NC... yes most are 10-15 over, many are 20 over... Been that way since Covid-19 hit And FWIW I don't mind buying tires, kinda hard to use 1000lbft of torque and get 100k out of TransForce tires,

I can run 70mph, in the right lane, and never pass anyone besides the occasional semi. As a matter of fact, I often get passed by semis while maintaining 70 mph. I have also nearly been rear ended on many occasions and been flipped the bird even more often.
It is exhausting, frustrating and anxiety inducing, to deal with a bunch of pissed of folks who think I am holding up their God given right to go fast. Especially when increasing speed to 75 or 80 greatly reduces the friction of traveling down the interstate. I still don't pass many people, but I get passed a lot less frequently, and fewer irate drivers feel the need to express their road rage at me.

So, by followingling your guideline "Traffic Volume dictates road speed. Cruise Control Set Point.", I end up with a cruise control set point of somewhere between 75 and 80, on most days. This is with a posted limit of 70 or 75.
In the city, it drops down to 60 or 65, but the police never enforce the speed limit in San Antonio. This leads to a bunch of idiots running ten under the limit, and even more idiots trying to go 80+. I usually split the difference and run 5 over. Less friction that way.

Traffic volume dictates speed as braking distance (full stop) is the measure. How far you are from the next guy is a problem compounded by how close he and seven others are to each other.

Running as fast or faster than the terminally-stupid won’t end well. It’s unsafe practice in the least capable vehicle design on the road.

1). Can’t read traffic and adjust
2). Makes beginners mistakes lifelong

— Excuses bad practice evidenced by tire wear on the vehicle itself.

How much faster is the 2020 model thru the quarter-mile than the 2005 model? Or is it?
The power-rating is a joke on you.
