Recently I had the waste gate actuator break and was loosing lots or power and boost causing black smoke and high egts when going up hills. I held the waste gate closed with a pair of vise grips and got all my power back again. Instead of buying a new wastegate actuator, about 168. 00 from Cummins I purchased a 16 CM non waste gate housing and installed it. Truck seemed to run well but lost some boost pressure. EGTs went down and turbo seemed to make some more noise. Yesterday I pulled a trailer ( about 8000 pounds) and now my truck does not pull good on any grade. EGTs went up to 1100 post turbo. Last week I pulled a tractor that weighed more with the same trailer and it pulled great, but that is when I had the 12 CM stock housing on it. I have read that the stock 12 CM housings are good for up to 275 horse power. I only have a number 6 TST Plate in it with a K&N air filter. No other mods besides transmission and torque convertor have been done. Could anyone tell me what is wrong here? :) Maybe now I am running out of fuel or something? What would make this pull strong up hills and keep EGT down? I was planning on putting Dynomite stage 3 90 horse injectors and also 3 k governor springs and also upgrading to a numer 4 TST plate. Maybe needs more fuel ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks ! Russ

I have a similar problem I think might do well in this thread. I have a 1995 RAM 3500, turbo-back 4" exhaust, ATS cold air intake, #5 torque plate, 16cm non-wastegated housing, pre-turbo EGT gauge, transmission temp gauge and boost gauge. Black smoke and the deep sound of the engine lugging occurs when the transmission shifts to high gear. High EGT, 1250 degrees, whenever I'm pulling the 10,000# trailer keep my eyes glued to the EGT gauge instead of the road. The truck pulls better than it did with the stock setup, but the eyes off the road is a bigger problem. Any suggestions on what to do to get some peace while driving would be appreciated.

Bigger housing = less overall pressure to spin the turbine wheel, thus less rpm from the compressor wheel. Change out the housing back to a 12CM and be done with it. Unless of course you want serious HP, then go to a whole new turbo that will suite your plans.

The 16cm housing is kind of a hohum way to increase turbo "capacity. " Forrest is right a S300 variant or hybrid turbo would be a better choice.

TSeran what RPM does your engine operate at when it shifts into OD? If it's below 1700-1800 RPM you need to turn OD off, much better to run at 2300 RPM than lugging it, probably get better MPG and have a happier engine to boot. If I'm pulling a grade, heavy load or going into a headwind I always leave OD off and keep it over 2000 RPM.

Ok guys, I understand that buying a performance turbo is the best thing to do. :) The price is what holds me back though. By keeping the new 16 CM housing on and putting injectors and a number 4 plate,,,, is it going to help out with this problem? Just looking for some more ideas. Thanks

more fuel will help you get up on the turbo quicker, but I honestly can't say that it's going to bring your pulling EGT's back in line. because I don't know

It may very well do so
