It all went O. K. until I started taking the 4 bolts that hold the hot end onto the compresser side off. The two with the least clearance are starting to booger and will not budge. What can I do?? Where can I buy some new bolts if I really screw these up? Help.

Steve

I started to miky up those bolts too when I did mine using an open end wrench. I took an old 1/2 box end wrench and ground the backside until it would slip in between the bolt and trubo. Couple of taps with a dead blow cracked them free.

AARRRGGH!!!!

I got the one right at the oil drain loose but the opposite one won't come and it is starting to look like a mess, I may just have to leave that 18. 5 on there

If you get it messed up enough a wrench will not work. Time to dig out the hammer and chisel and work on it some. Come in from the side and dig into the head. Then tap it until it comes loose. You want to chisel counter clock wise to loosen it. Do this with a dull chisel also. You do not want to cut the head off. You want to turn it.

Penetrating oil

Lots ofWD-40 or whatever brand you prefer.

Lots of heat. Get that sucker cherry red.

Heat cool heat cool penetrating oil.

I had to beat on mine.

Once they are broke loose you use them as jacking bolts while alternately beating on the housing.

Oo. CAUTION: After every strike, make sure the wheel still turns. You don't want to bend any turbine blades. Oo.

NOTE: Make sure to mark the position of the inlet or at least take a photo so the new housing is lined up the same. Hooking the intake up might be a bit difficult with the turbo pointing at the hood if you know what I mean.

PB Blaster Baby!

Many folks have recommended "PB Blaster" for a pen. oil on these bolts. I've used the stuff and it works like no other penetrating oil I've ever used.

"ASk for it by Name" @ your local Auto Parts Store.

Good Luck!

I'll 3rd it. The best stuff I have ever used. Bill

Are you trying to take it apart while it's connected to the

engine or did you remove the turbo unit and put it onto a

work bench? Personally,I think it's easier to take apart if

it's out of the truck.

Guys, it is easier to remove on the truck. Use some wooden or plastic wedges between (stagger ) turbo and housing. Beat evenly. Works everytime. 2 of the bolts are easier to remove if you can lossen turbo alittle from housing and rotate the turbo to give you more room. As far as the intake ,it can be rotated were ever you like at any time by lossening the outer housing/back plate and spinning into position.

Replace bolts if damaged with stainless and never seize.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, fellas It is off the truck

I put PB Blaster on everything(knock on wood) about 5 or 6 times over the last week. the bolt that won't come out is the one at the oil drain so it must not have got any or enough PB. I really soaked it good tonight and will try it again tommorrow. How hard is it to get the replacement bolts, can you get them at a local hardware store??

Thanks, Steve

The secret to PB Blaster is to apply it and while it is still fluid induce some vibration, IE tap on the fastener. I don't know why, but this really helps the process. I use a brass punch and medium hammer, it works well. The ultimate would be to fab a brass punch for an air hammer and really vibrate that thing!

BTW this secret is listed on the can, one other thing I do is when the bolt starts to let loose, but then tightens, alternate the direction in & out while spraying more PB into the gap at the bolt.

If the PB fails, try Marvel Mystery Oil. Always has worked for me.

You should be able to get bolts easy enough... . just get the same grade. . match up the hash marks on the head.

Use a little never-seize (or blind grease as some call it) on the bolt threads when you re-assemble.

Good luck.

I would caution you on using stainless bolts in this application, stainless makes for lousy bolts that are prone to binding and breaking off, as they are soft. I would only recommend using stainless when something is through bolted(nut on back side) so that when you go to take it apart and it shears you do not have to drill out the remaining chunk... I would use a good grade 5 or 8 and neversieze. Just my experience...

I agree with RGT. I am a boater and have lots of experience with stainless bolts... ... I stay away from stainless unless it is decorative or in a very corrosive place.

Use never seize like everyone is saying. Make sure you get the copper based. The silver will not hold up to the heat that our exhausts put out. I have had problems with the silver on temps above 350 degrees.

Thanks, guys

I got it out last night after I got off here, just tapped it some more with a chisel and put the wrench to it and it come out. Now I have to try to get the housing off, it seems pretty tight on there. It won't move much. Would it be O. K. to use the old bolts, I( only boogered that one up and I could file enough to get a wrench on it. right now the roads a pretty bad, 8 inches of snow(pretty good for around here).

Steve

I wouldn't reuse the old bolts. They are probably a grade 5. With all the heat and cool cycles it has been threw. It just might break when you go to tighten it back up. New bolts are cheap insurance.

stubborn housing

:) The good folks at BD advised me to grab the unit between my legs and beat on the housing with a brass hammer around and around for about 30 minutes. Mine was really stuck and came loose after about 40 minutes. Not a bad job after all. I used a high temp never sieze. Tim:)
