Joe, have you modified your fuel lines ? With alot of talk going around about the need to up grade the fuel lines on the 24 valved engines, I wonder if it is nessary for us properly valved ones to do it also.

Prozap, ceramic clutch

Clutch:
Jed has a custom modified 13" Sachs, like I have mentioned before on this forum.

14 cm2 housing: this is a residual from a former high-dollar uprate package. It will be replaced with the Superturbo when the owner has funds. (Donations accepted).

fuel lines: the fuel lines are stock on my Ram. Even the return line--still going to the fuel filter and heating up the fuel. That is ALL fuel lines, low and high pressure. Of course when the head was off, I took advantage of the improved accessibility to replace the fuel return hose.

air system: Other than the Superturbo, all my intake air system is stock-- filter box, filter, 3" lines and intercooler. I did remove the collar from between the fender and the air box.

Hi Joe, thank you for the info on the 370hp injectors. Is the 175hp manual pump and the 180hp auto pump the same? TST's chart shows the same plates and hp/torque ratings for both. You mentioned a soft spot around 1100 rpm with the auto and tight converter. Would you recommend the 370s over the 215s for the auto if running the #5 plate? I am going to get one or the other and just want to be real sure, before buying and installing, what I can expect. Thanks again.

The 175 and 180pumps are very similar. The governors are a bit different so the max possible power curves are also different across rpm.

215 injectors are user friendly, give a nice increase. 370s will give more white smoke in the winter (not a problem for you, I suspect) and because they want so much fuel, you get the delivery valve issue on some autos. You need to decide how much hp you want and whether you will sacrifice anyting at all getting there (like a bit of in-town mpg). Cost and availability can also be an issue, depending on what sources you check. For those who want the power, the 370s are a great advance, and retain the Bosch reliability and moderate cost advantages. I wonder what would happen with a set of them extrude honed? I suspect the 12 mm plungers and barrels and the 1. 8 mm ID lines would not "keep up".

I knew I'd get your attention on that one! hehehe #ad

Well, another approach would be to hold the tips of the injectors against a bench grinder until there is another small hole in the bottom. #ad
That should add "some" fuel flow. #ad

Whaddaya think I should do next for Sickly (aka Anaconda)? I'd hate to put him on drugs (propane) but we correctly valved ones have to keep HVAC and his drug addicted Red Ram in line.

Joe, with 215 injectors and a #4 plate in my 160, will I have less loss of bottom end with the 40-16 than with the 35-16? We are about to head north and if it works out, will stop by BD and have the timing set and Piers gov spring kit installed.

I am using my foot to control egt and would like to solve that soon. I'd like to make the right choice the first time around.

I think the HX40 would be better but I don't know for sure. Most folks who go for the HX40 do so first and foremost for egt reduction, secondly for more power over 2000 rpm. It will help more with egt and hp for sure. Neither turbo with the 16 spools as fast as the HX35/12 cm2 but that's life. If you want power, you have to feed it and maintain it. The key will be picking the correct torque converter (stall speed) for the power and rpm range you end up with.

Joe (and others):

Later in the year, I'm looking to go up to the next level on my '96, which currently has a #5 plate and 16cm2 housing. I haven't dynoed it yet, but boost peaks at 36 psi, so I'm figuring low to mid 300 hp range. Plate is centered, AFC housing is all the way forward.

I was talking with a friend at Diesel Injection of Pittsburg about a pump rebuild, mainly because my truck has a really lousy idle when it's either very cold or very hot out (very cold == 50 or less, relative to the fact that I'm in CA). It likes to stall, despite being an auto. It's really bad to stall if you give it some power, then back off suddenly, such as you might do when trying to make a left turn across an intersection and discover you didn't time it just right. VERY annoying.

At any rate, he suggested two possible choices... one being a tricked out pump rebuild with the larger injectors, good for around 500 hp. The other idea is to live with the idle issues and use the governor spring kit. In both cases he recommended the HX40.

What are your thoughts on this?

Rob

PS: transmission has the BD supertight converter and valvebody. Gears are 3. 54, but I'm thinking 4. 10's would be a good idea now that I have the 225/70-19. 5 tires.

Hi Rob,
The gov. spring kit actually gives one a better idle than the factory setup, but if your truck idles okay in normal operating temps I would be checking fuel pressure & idle rpm's before doing anything else. You want a nice smooth 20 lbs + or - 2 lbs at idle, should be 30 lbs or more at 1800 rpm's. Idle should be set to 850 rpm's

Your problem might be injectors, but I would be more suspicious of the overflow valve or fuel return hose. It is also just barely possible that Bosch screwed up and set your 2 sets of governor springs to different tensions. Piers or I could check the pump out if you see us at a meet. Meanwhile, try a known good overflow valve, check for fuel leaks from the return lines, and if you want injectors anyway, why not get them to remove that variable.

Bosch shops in general do not have experience with cranking up governed speed the best way (the spring kit), and one shop's 500 hp is another's 350 hp. It's a whole lot easier to brag about 500 than to get it on the Dynojet. Piers and I have been there.

RobG. you right around the corner from me, I sounds like the idle is to low, what is it at?
PS HVAC and another guys are planning on going to Rohnert Park Machine to the dyno I have been on a couple of times for a updated hp # for me and to check out what the other truck is doing, if you would like to join us your welcome.
Adam

Ditto on Joes comment about one guys 500HP being 350 HP to another. I have seen that firsthand as well.
My old ECM off the 98 was showing a guy well over 825 torque on 'the other guys dyno' and the only other change on his truck was the RV 275 injectors.

Ooops I am in the undervalved area. Sorry

Joe any luck setting up the Dyno Day at Silver Springs? We will have to kick around some dates so everyone can come. I think we need to dyno my truck with the 370's to see the deference. Then we can see the extrude hones in action. #ad
I think Piers is going to send me some delievery valves I will get those in first. Here we go again with more power I'm sure HVAC will be here anytime. If some one will sponsor me a few thousand I'm not afraid. Mybe it will take MY6 and me together but we can get him. LOL

Any time is OK with Silver State. I was just waiting for the weather to cool off a bit, and to stir the pot and see how much interest there is. I guess I'll post on the events forum and start that process. I will have a set of 370s and also delivery valves around for anyone who is inquisitive. We don't know if they will give any hp or just fix the roughness problem that automatics seem to have the most of. The 370s do seem good, or are you suggesting that I would get 610 hp from extrude honed injectors? Go ahead, make my (dyno) day! #ad

uh oh, not another thing, these are going to be great on drugs.
LOL

Adam, get your Ram back on that dyno! We gotta hear how it does "clean and straight" and on drugs. I'm guessing it will do better now without drugs than it used to with them! Should get well over 500 when "high" on C3H8. What does barbecued Ram smell like? hehe #ad

Scott, we need 3 more posts from you, even if you are overvalved. Get to that magic 1000 posts!
