Here I am

Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 181's or 191's on 160 with 370's?

Hello Jim, now where did the timing discussion come from? I'm just a fuzz past 16.

OH, you just read some of the older posts.

I'm dicussing this in PM with another truck set up just like mine. He bought a 215 pump--dammit.

Yep, I'll run the timing up before I change pumps.

Timing makes sense. There's no shortage of fuel beyond 5-10% throttle. It'll smoke and HAUL BUTT just fine. MOF I rarely go past 75% throttle on this one as the pyro moves SO fast--and 3/4 moves it out nicely.

Are you "flooding" it with all that fuel at that rpm? If you aren't making any boost you are likely "lugging" it? So maybe its choking on the raw fuel?

The 215 pump seems not to have this complaint so much, if at all.

Good luck, Andy

I should have remained silent, but I read your profile and I have a 95 truck also. Timing really helps. good Juck Jim

I don't know what the hell is going on. "Flooding" is highly unlikely as it picks up and goes if you put the foot down. And there is no smoke until you do that. Of course then -there's PLENTY.

I suspect it has to do with the p7100 cam profile and fill time on the 160, but nobody likes to talk about the nastly little innards of a p-pump.

More timing seems to be the cure. I went conservative before. Now _I_ am ready to blow a gasket.

wait!

STOP, HOLD IT, put down that wrench!

It's the spring!!!
Oo.

One phone call solved the problem. Thanks Jeff.

It seems that an oscillation of the throttle linkage too slight to be felt in the foot is responsible for the problem I've been having.

Some folks think it's the converter--happens after lockup, some think DV's or timing, some think 160's will never run 370's. Think LINKAGE SPRINGS!!!

Swapped the double wound spring for a heavier single and almost completely fixed it. Around town is possible now. Still a little bit of chugalug, but not near as bad. I know I'm headed in the right direction.

Spread the news. :D

Wade:

I'm super happy for you! On several with a similiar combo, I've found your complaint a result of mucho fuel and no boost (air) to burn it. Personally I think the rack and governor are "in between" and confused at the throttle position/rpm you describe (fueling mods cause the confusion). When you stomp or roll into the throttle, boost comes up and likely rectifies the im-balance. As you are aware, others have posted resolve to the problem as a balanced combination of fueling, timing and boost at the "problem" zone. I presume they may or may not have been down the return spring, lockup r. p. m. , re-flash routes etc.

Kudo's on less chugging!

Andy

a $2 universal double return spring was the first thing I bought for my truck... I guess w/ the 4k GSK there's basicly zero throttle tension. it was a PITA to drive! I don't understand WHY that's the case, but aparently it is...

forrest

Update

Truck is just unfreakin driveable like it is--between 50-60.

I'm going to screw with the GSK springs and slide the plate back and I don't know what else.

More timing eventually.

The throttle spring thing helped, but to really smooth it out I had to use a horrible stiff spring. WAY too much pedal pressure.

Total non-issue with a gearbox!

Okay I've searched --where do I learn about clicks on the gov springs. In or out? How many?

are 191s better with the 370s?

you still have a stock turbo wade?

let me know if you get it set up good, i am looking at doing similar mods, also whats your mpg with em?

are they a new mod? your profile says you have 215s...

That was the purpose of this thread. To see if anyone could tell a difference in 191/181 DV's on a 160 with 370's for engine smoothness--not power.

no luck finding out.

If someone would promise that 191's would fix it, I'd buy a set in a minute. No one will.

that is also what i am trying to find out, becuse i am thinking about a set of 370s or 215, just trying to find out how it will run and what dv i need... ...

I haven't gone back to tiny DV's, but 181's, cut-DV's, and 022 DV's did not get rid of the stumble. 181's were the most smooth... in my 160 pump... .

Bigger DV's only seemed to make it worse.

Take what I say about my truck with a grain of salt... I may have issues with the pump... . it's 1200 miles from here, so it'll have issues until I can get my hands on it.

Matt

I tried 215's with the #4 and got no heat.

The 370's give plenty-O-EGT! Silly me with stock charger still on there.

TODAY--I cranked the Guvner Springs in a whole turn and slid the plate all the way back. Might be a tad better, but I went too far with the springs. Had to run the idle up to keep it from stalling when put into gear. (Another issue only applicable to damned AUTOmatics. )

I'm thinking that a #6 or #5 plate might be more liveable with my pump/transmission situation.

Who wants to trade for a #4?

Yes, and I will fix the situation with a 215 pump eventually. Oo.

My take on the deal is 160 + #4 + 370's =no good for daily driving unless you put a gearbox in the thing.

I don't see how switching plates is going to impact your drivability all that much (unless you are referring to EGT's)? I think your issue it more GSK related.
