With my new Arctic Fox 811 the current stock Michelins won't be enough. Looks like best choice is going to be 19. 5" wheels/tires. Looking at either Vision or Rickson's. Leaning toward Rickson's because of proper offset. I saw an older post of someone using Retreads at $125/piece. Any tire treads to steer clear of in this size? Up here in the Pacific Northwest we have rain, sun and snow. Sometimes all in the same day (2wks ago).



Also, who has the best price on 19. 5" wheels and/or tires?
 
I believe the best prices that you'll find is from rickson's. I have michelin xde/ms 245/70/19. 5 and absolutely love them wouldn't trade them for anything else once you go 19. 5 tires you will never want anything else. But be aware if you do order from rickson's it may take a while for you to get them! :-laf :D :D :D
 
don't do the Visions unless they released a new model... they're ugly :eek: which would be acceptable if they were forged (because of their price) but they're cast and ugly... two strikes :(
 
I just got my Rickson's. They are nice, it only took 9 weeks to get them!

That's what I was afraid of. I can have the Vision's within 2days. First trip with the new camper is in a few weeks. Think I'm going to go with the Toyo M 608Z in 245/70 R19. 5.
 
I have Rickson's and love them. I had to wait a while but it sure was worth it. Check with Rickson's about Vision also. I know they usually keep them in stock.

I have almost the same set up as you. 2004 LB 1 ton 4X4. I have a 11' lance camper. When I am just running the truck and camper the weight on the drives is 7500 lbs, When I hook up the boat with the super hitch and the 3' extension I run 8300lbs on the drives. I went with Vision and Hankook DH01 245's. You will need to put on some sort of helper in the back you will squat in the rear. I will never use air bags again I put on the Timbren helper and it just rides on the over loads and sits just above level in the rear. When you take the camper off the truck rides normal. I got the wheels and tires at LesSchwab
 
My Rickson's keep the tires under the truck where they're suppose to be.

I would've preferred the Rickson. However, they're not easy to get a hold of when trying to spend my money. They'll have zero incentive to help after the sale. I chose the Toyo M 608Z. Almost went with the Kuhmo. They go on tomorrow.



Anyone sipe their 19. 5's?
 
I had Les Schwab sipe mine --- the center ribs/lugs only. The guy at the shop told me that they had some complaints with the 19. 5's that were fully siped. The drivers siad they felt "squirrely". I didn't have them sipe the shoulders of the tread and my tires have never felt squirrelly to me and I have had them in some fairly deep snow and on some pretty slick roads where they worked very well.
 
I have had my BFG's siped except the outer lugs too. They improved the traction considerably even on dry pavement.

With the 19. 5s don't be afraid to experiment with the pressure to get a better empty ride. I use an ir heat gun to check temps to be the air pressure is not too low

Just for clarification... the tire pressure isn't too low, not the temps.
 
I have michelin xde/ms 245/70/19. 5

That's what I started with. The went 132K before wearing out. Pretty dang good considering I gross in the upper 30's almost daily. I replaced them with Sumitomo 918's in the 225 size. They cost $225ea vs $325 for the XDE's.

I would never run a recap unless it's under a flatbed. They are pickier about pressure and the potential for major damage to the truck is too great. I know a lot of guys run them, but I've had terrible luck with them on my trailer.

Rims... go aluminum if you can. I went steel and they suck. Can't seem to keep the powdercoating on. Rickson did a lousy job of prepping the steel and they guy who re-did it (locally) didn't do much better.
 
How is the ride when empty with these on a 2nd gen? I'm thinking about going with the 19. 5x7. 5 steel ricksons and either a 245 or 265 series tire. I've never driven anything with a tire that had a higher load range than E. I know my ride pretty much sucks right now.
 
They are stiffer than a light truck tire, even when aired down to modest pressures, like 50 psi. They are also much, much heavier than the E-rated 16's, and require good shocks to keep that mass under control. With that said, I don't mind the ride with them, particularly if loaded heavy. That's when they shine.
 
Just rode home with the new tires. It's like riding with the stock tires at higher pressure. Had to remove all of the air out of the spare to make it fit with the SuperHitch. Tires are 245/70 R19. 5. I have onboard air with the Pacbrake. Also have onboard air on the Jeep.

I am pretty sure they would be safe at lower pressures,that is why I recommended using a temp gun to be sure they do not get hot. The tire companies will not endorse lower pressures because they have not done any testing to prove it is safe with the extreme light load a pick up will be.
 
I have the aluminim Ricksons on my 97. It doesn't look like you can get the forged aluminim anymore.



I'd go with the Visions now. The looks are a personal thing I don't like the looks of the Ricksons but they were the right wheel for me. Visions are cast but so are the stock wheels and I'd rather have cast aluminim than steel wheels.



I have Goodyear G124 245's and they ride a bit stiffer but handle my camper great. I'm always amazed how well they work in the wind much less body roll.



I have to think that there is a market for these wheels why somebody else doesn't start making them is beyond me.
 
Bob 4x4: I agree with you on the lower pressures. As long as you're not over-flexing the sidewalls, I don't think there's a problem with running them a bit lower in pressure. Too low and you can scrub them off the rims, as they aren't built for true sand pressures.
