Hi. I recently purchased a 1991 W250 5-spd with 135,000 1-owner miles. The odometer stopped working while driving yesterday. When I bought the truck, owner told me it needed an ABS sensor which he purchased and sold with truck. I put the new sensor in yesterday thinking maybe it would fix the odometer issue but no such luck. ABS light was on before I changed the sensor and remains on with new sensor so I've now got two problems. Any reason as to why odometer stopped and ABS light remains on?

Thanks,
Greg

ABS has nothing to do with speedo . to fix the Light open glove box and behind it there is a Black box disconnect it the light will go off. as for speedo it's Most likly the adapter on transfer case that the wires hook to .Replace that first and see if the speedo work's .The Thing is you don't really need the abs anyway so by unhooking the black box .it takes away the Light also.

The gears inside the speedometer that drive the odometer are probably broken. Odometergears.com is where I got mine.

Thanks for the input everyone! Took speedo completely apart and found the 16-tooth gear had one tooth broken off. Guess I found the problem. I ended up ordering from odometergears.com like listed above.

I forgot to mention i had the shaft on the peice that goes on the transmission or t-case rounded off before as well

For your abs light, yes, you can disconnect. But you also just disconnected your ABS function.

99% of the time, the ABS light will come on due to green rot in the harness. If you follow the hardness from the rear diff sensor up to the frame rail, you will find a connector when the pigtail connects to the frame harness. $10 says you will find your issue there.

My ABS did that when the truck was only a couple months old. The dealer tried to fix the problem by changing the box by the glove box. Before I got 2 blocks the light came on. I turned around, drove straight back to dealer but left truck running this time. They hooked up their code reader and found the harness from the axle to the anti-lock valve bad. Replaced harness and have had no problems since. The reason it wouldn't show up for them was when you turned the key off the code would go away until you drove and the harness moved to break connection.
I tried unhooking the abs box and the first time I stopped quick the rear brakes locked and I almost swapped ends. I hooked it back up. They really do work on these trucks.

I have had the same problem
used the haynes tech
traced wires and ohm readings. found the wire going through the firewall was bad, ran 20 gage wire to black box and no light and ABS works

my stopped years ago, just last month picked up a new gear for the speedometer. that would be my guess, broken plastic gear
ebay was $23

You talking the gear multi tooth exciter ring that mounts beside the ring gear on the carrier assy? That should be metal, not plastic.

It is the plastic gear in the speedometer
Have to remove cluster
Take speedometer out and on it is the gear for your mileage
While I had it out I changed all lights
#194 and put in LED ones

Yes, exactly that.
I removed the faceplate and pulled just the speedo head out as I already did the bulbs in my cluster a few months back.
I got both gears for $25 shipped from Kerry at laspeedometergear.com
They're graphite impregnated Delrin gears and work good - didn't need to file, fit or lube them.

I had the same problem
1st one is the gear in the speedometer, I got one off Xbay, $23
that fixed that one
the other is the ABS wired. you can trace them out and find the open wire or just un plus black box in glove box
