HI All,

I have a chance to buy an early 1991 W250 4x4 (no intercooler). The truck has 202K, a 5 sp and has a pretty good body and clean undercarriage. The previous owner put on a 4" exhaust (3" downpipe), BHAF, and Borgeson Steering shaft to replace the factory rag joint ... . The AC does not work and the vac pump is leaking a bit(engine oil),The truck is cooled by twin electric fans (old fan was not good because of a bad bearing and apparantly the shaft where the fan mounts is buggered up). The master cyl is leaking... . Owner says that he has not had to do anything to the truck... NO pump work or injector work... . It is an LE model truck with like new tires. The only other thing I can think of is that the clutch grabs off very close to the bottom... . can this be adjusted to grab a little higher up in the pedal movement or is this a sign of a worn clutch or other problem? Any idea what a reasonable price for this truck would be?... Anything else I should be looking for? The owner is asking $5000/OBO.

Thanks for any and all help in this.

Andrew

I had a 90 and sold it a while back for a little less than $4000- it sounds similiar to this truck. It had about 250k on it which original clutch in good shape. The clutch on these is hydraulic and no adjustment, so if the pedal isn't righ it probably needs work. The brakes are something to check, I had to put a couple master cylinders on mine. My truck had antilock rear brakes, there is a valve which operates them that can also be a pain. I had extremely good luck with mine and sometimes regret selling it, they are certainly some of the toughest truck made.

What is the deal with the fan again? How can he run the belt without the fan hub assembly being intact? with the clutch, it could need bled, or the rollpin holding the line into the slave cylinder may have worked its way loose, allowing it to leak fluid out. Getting that system bled is nearly impossible, as there is no bleeder screw. A worn clutch will normally engage right near the top of the pedal travel. If it is low, I'd suspect hydraulic issues. You can remove the pushrod from the clutch master cylinder, and cut it and splice in a piece of steel if you want.

I agree with KSears- if the truck needs anything at all, the value drops fast. With no pictures, and not seeing it in person, it's hard to say, but I'd go no more than $4200.

HI,

Thanks for the replies so far... . As far as the fan goes, apparantly there was something wrong with the fan hub itself (where the blades attach to the hub) so the owner unscrewed the assembly from the pulley but while doing this he somehow buggered up the threads on the pulley. So now, even of he bought a new fan assy (he said was about $160), he would also have to buy a new pulley assy which cost another $160 (The serpentine belt runs the factory route but a new fan hub cannot be installed because of the buggered up threads... the pulley still turns fine tho)... . He opted to install a shrouded dual electric fan unit instead... . He installed it very well... . almost looks factory... . His thinking was that it would be a little cheaper, allow the truck to warm up quicker and may even get better MPG's since the engine is not even connected to a fan... . He did admit, while the truck does warm up a little quicker, that he did not notice any real MPG improvements... Kind of a shame since I thought about instaling an electric fan on my truck to see if I could get better MPG's... Oh well I guess his experiment saved me some $$ which is always a good thing...

THanks again

Andrew

Ok, so the fan clutch went bad, and in the process, he buggered up the threads removing it. GOtcha. I have actually run them without a fan empty in the summer with no ill effects.

On an aerodynamic brick like our pickups, I dont think removing the fan will increase MPGs a bit. Plus, the fan almost never runs, so there should be no power loss. I'd think the AC would pull more on the engine.
