I just recently bought a 1992 D250 12v inter cooled from an tow yard besides where it got rear ended this truck is in perfect shape no tears in the interior no cracks in the dash its damn near perfect! But I can't get it to crank, I just put a new battery in it and everything works but it wont turn over, whoever had it before rigged up a button with an extension chord going from the positive on the battery to the starter but there's no power to the starter. We switched the wires from positive to negative and vise versa trying to figure it out but no luck. Does anyone have a clue whats wrong and how to fix it? I ordered a new starter just to be on the safe side hopefully I don't use it.

Fusible link on the driver fender well is bad. There is a bundle of them there and one is the starter relay wire. They will burn out internally and not show external issues. Need an FSM to figure out which one is which, or, just replace the bundle with a fuse block.

I tried switching them around and still no power, I tried to jump start from the starter and still no power. I guess I'll just have to wait for the starter to get in and replace it.

Is that truck a auto or manual ? If its a manual the clutch safety switch might be bad and there is 2 fixes buy one and replace it or cut the wires and splice together ,if its a auto your nuetral safety switch might be bad or a bad connection . you should be able to make it crank by jumping across the starter and if the switch is on it should fire or put a jumper wire from the postive of the batt to the pump wire

its an automatic unfortunately. I tried to jump starter already and no luck. Who ever had the truck before me rigged up a button out of an extension chord with the black wire going to the battery and the white wire going to the starter and I'm not quite sure what that's for? Where can I find the neutral safety switch? The linkage is currently taken out and the truck is in neutral cause it got towed.

What those two wires were for was to energize the starter is how he had it rigged up . The nuetral safety switch is on the driver side of the transmission . It has 3 wires on it . One is the ground one is the reverse lights the other is for ignition , if you have a chiltons this will exsplain it better but if you look you should be able to tell were they go ,or pull a tail light and check a color but with a jumper wire from a power source hook onto those and it should dfo some thing but you should be able to get it to fire by jumping across the starter , they have starter switches at some parts places ,( re mote switches )

I tested the neutral safety and it's fine reverse lights come on and everything seemed fine, I retried the relays and they sound like it works fine (I can hear it click when the key is turned) so everything keeps leaning back to the starter in my opinion but I'm no mechanic

Do you have a test light ? Are you getting power to the starter ?
If you take that littel wire off the starter and you turn the switch will it light up ? If not that small wire could be faulty .

Try this one thing take a hammer and give the starter a good smack , not light either a goid one sometimes they can stick from sitting so give it a goo rap with a hammer

I've hit it with a hammer several times and I was getting -12v? Last time I checked it I replaced the switch the previous owner added and that's getting power

Yeah I tried to jump it and it did nothing all the mechanics I've talked to said to do all of that and it all seems fine but the starter..

No sir, I got the new starter in today. If I get time and help this week hopefully I can get it out on and started

UPDATE: I got the starter installed and it tries to crank with the battery but I'm guessing it doesn't have enough juice? I hooked the jumper cables up to the starter and it tries to crank and does for a second but then shuts right back off is there any ideas on what it can be now? Its a tad bit low on oil (I'm going to add more in the morning and give it another shot) But if that isnt the problem what else could it be?

Have the battery tested if it's bad it's not going to hold a charge .and it takes a strong battery to start one of these truck's .double check all your connection's and you should be good to go.

It's a brand new battery only a week old if that. I've had it hooked up to a trickle charge for the last hour or so

If its cold out you could plug the block heater in that will get the oil and coolant warmed up so it will fire easier . Have you put a socket on the alternator or a barring tool to indeed confirm the engine is not siezed up

Sounds like air in the system ,are you sure it has fuel ? Dont go by the guage , go get a 5 of fuel and put in it , id also get a fuel filter and make sure the fuel heater is tight , its under the fuel filter , but it sounds like your going to have to crack a injector

I finally got around to working on the truck again, I replaced the fuel filter and put fresh diesel in it and added 5 gallons to the tank cracked all the injectors and fuel is spraying out of them but it still won't fire. I was told to take a rag soaked in gas and put it over the turbo did that and it started for 30 seconds and died again I also tried a little bit of ether and still wouldn't start - what else could the problem be? I don't have a whole lot of money to dump into it right now and I'm trying to hold off on having a mechanic work on it.
