Bill, take a note on what KRS says as it's true, the trannies in our trucks are a weak link without a doubt but I do believe that a guy can turn up the power a bit and be ok. This is why I promote the following setup, a #10 plate, 3K's and Timing. 3K's and timing are for the motor just because it needs timing and the RPM band of 3K's, now comes the #10 plate, I really like the way it comes in later in the power band, later in the power band means more pump speed on the transmission rather than power coming in sooner with a #8,6 or 5. To me this is the best setup than one can have, but don't let the plate number fool you, I have an 98' auto truck running around with this setup at 285/697 on a dynojet so there is room to grow and I haven't pulled any of my tricks out yet on it. If you need info it's free... . just ask.

Kind of on a side note, but something I was wondering. My '98 12v 5-speed lacks power and doesn't get great mileage that I've heard of. Only 73K, just broke in!! I was thinking, being a California truck, did they stack on power robbing emisions? ... other than the catt?

Thanx

Justin

Justin- Slide the plate and housing FWD, and turn the starwheel. That's usually good for some pep.

Advancing the timing is a little more involved than the above, but it IS recommended.

Don't know what you can get away with in that state.

JustinLee,

Some 12 valve California engines had an EGR system which is pretty restrictive on the intake side. There have been various fixes posted in this site and a search using keywords "EGR system" should turn up some good info for you.

Also that cataltic converter will cut both power and fuel milage if it clogs.

There's one big advantage that you have SO FAR in CA and that's that the trucks are exempt from emmision testing. Because they won't look at it you could simply cut it out of your exhaust and see if things don't get better right away. One (or more) of the vendors, Geno's garage, sells a "test pipe" for about $65. 00 that's made to TEMPORARILY replace the catylist in order to tell what effect it's having.
