I just got home from a round trip which was 4423 miles total.

I varied from a slow point of 55 to a high point of 70 MPH.

There was also a bunch of time, maybe 400 miles total that was 41 sec per mile marker.

I averaged 17. 9 MPG for the trip. That was reciept wise and hand calced for mileage, and I was very happy with that. I don't think the old 12V is gonna do much better stock...

Not bad mileage. You don't have much information in your signiture about your vehicle. If you have a 2wd manual with 3. 55 gears, you should be able to do a little better than that. 4x4 auto, your right on the money. 2nd gen 12 valves get better fuel mileage than any of the dodges. Once you hit 70 the milage goes in the tank (or out of the tank for that matter). I get around 20 mpg doing 40, 18 mpg doing 60 and 15 mpg doing 75-80. Don't believe anyone who says they get 28-30 mpg. Maybe 25mph, down hill, with hurricane force winds at their back, and following a tractor trailer hauling magnets.

I did notice the harder I pushed it, the more it burnt, and there was a tank with a horrendous headwind...

But, my last truck was a 96 7. 3 Ford, and my best guess would have been 14 with it.

The Dodge sure was an enjoyable ride, I do love this truck... :-laf

Looks like you've got a nice truck. If you got any pics put them up, I love to see pictures of nice 12 valves. Oh, if you ever wanna sell, send me a pm:)

For whatever reason my 96 4x4 long box club cab's MPG doesn't seem to drop that much when I run at mid-upper 70mph range versus ~70mph. I took a trip from WA state to South Dakota and back and on average drove 75-76mph much of the way. All but one tank was 20. 0 to 20. 8 MPG. Not bad for a 420K mile truck.

Now my '98 12v 2wd short box auto gets the same or a bit worse MPG than the '96, even road trips where the auto is locked up 99% of the time. It runs smoother and has better power but doesn't get better MPG.

don't feel bad M1Ashooter my truck has gotten 12mpg in town or on the highway since I got it and I have thrown everything but the kitchen sink at it to improve it to no avail whether I drive at 60mph or 80mph makes no difference

my 96 SCLB 4x4 w/3. 54s (when auto) got 21. 8 on a 490mi round trip, with an average (total) speed of 66mph.

I haven't done any highway trips since the 5spd conversion.

But in-town driving, the auto averaged about 12. 5. The 5speed is closer to 15.

mods are 4" DP, BHAF, 4" to 7" stack, no cat, no muffler, #10 FF, AFC FF, stock timing, 3K GSK. all else is OE.
